The last week of the 2026 summer program at the Boothbay Sea and Science Center was filled with exploration, creativity, and plenty of fun! Our campers took a closer look at the birds that call the coast of Maine home, learning about species found both onshore and offshore. We headed out on Linekin Bay aboard BSSC’s lobster boat to observe birds in their natural environment and watch their behaviors up close. Back on the shore, campers continued their learning through bird-themed crafts, birding on the pier using ID books and binoculars, and exciting games like “Steal the Egg.”

DeShannon's song played over and over in my head after I attended Maine State Music Theater's current show, "Come From Away," book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. Given the state of our world right now, this show couldn't be staged at a better time: It demonstrates our capacity for kindness,  compassion, empathy, all of which are sorely needed now.

It has been another busy week of activities here at the Point and sadly the season is winding down quickly.

Thank you to all who hosted an activity last week. Robert and Maureen Driscoll organized the kid’s trivia night and Mary Rush ran the kid’s picnic. Thank you to them.

The adult trivia night had a huge turnout of people thanks to the efforts of Jessica Gorham.

Thanks to Amy Imhof and Carol May who hosted the second book club night on Wednesday evening and to China McHold for a very informative talk on how to reduce stress.

Already August is half past, and we are saddened to see folks leaving the Island for their winter homes. Regardless, we enjoy reminiscing about all of the wonderful things that have happened on the Isle of Springs this busy summer. It seems as though a double standard is being used by the abutter on his own property vs. what he uses to delay the Eastside Park. He nit pics everything about the park, including the need for a sidewalk and crossing sign on Atlantic Avenue in front of the park, as suggested at the last planning board meeting.

Note: Boothbay Lobster Wharf, a short distance down the road with half of their parking across the road and entertainment weekends all summer, does not require sidewalks or crossing signs, apparently without any problems.

The TV attack ads being run by our current senator against Troy Jackson could not be more false and misleading. Troy Jackson is a quiet, respectful, hard-working Mainer who has championed the needs of working and middle-class Mainers since he got into the legislature. I know this because I served with him in the legislature, and saw him in action day after day.

The TV attack ads against him are hateful. They are reminders that his opponent has no useful policy initiatives to offer; she offers only what Trump offers, and all she can do is try to tear down Troy Jackson.

In past articles, I have mentioned the Maine Veterans Coordinating Committee (MVCC), but I want to remind those who may remember it and introduce it to those who have never heard of it. 

Maine is unique when it comes to its veteran population. About 7% of Mainers are veterans, putting Maine fifth among the states in the percentage of veterans in its population. Only Alaska, Virginia, Montana and Wyoming rank higher. Yet, unlike several of those states, Maine has a relatively small military presence, with Portsmouth Naval Shipyard being the state’s only major active-duty installation.

The Sprucewold Association annual meeting was held Aug. 1 at the Linekin Green. Cheers to our president for running the shortest meeting I can remember. The annual potluck was held at 5 p.m.; I’m certain it was well attended. We had dinner guests and didn’t attend.

For more than two decades, there has been a special kind of creative energy growing at the Boothbay Region YMCA.

It has appeared beneath stage lights and behind easels, in dance studios and rehearsal rooms, in the nervous excitement before a first audition and the applause from an audience after a final bow. It has traveled from Boothbay Harbor to national stages, and it has helped generations of young people discover confidence, friendship, discipline and the courage to express themselves.

We know it as Y-Arts.

The first-ever karaoke/sing-along at the Community House on Monday night was a rollicking success. It was organized and emceed by Louisa Rossano, who kept things moving by putting the 16 attendees – both young and old – at ease. Monday, Aug. 10, was not a good day to be a menhaden in Linekin Bay. Sunday looked like a great day for them as schools were in session in a number of spots (of course, that could mean they were being attacked from below). Some of us were even saying that we hadn’t seen any where near that many fish this year. Well, I guess our phones are listening as at about 11:45 Sunday night the first boat came in, and with lights a blazing, the assault began. Throughout the morning, six more boats had circled their nets. I noticed one was even from Portland. All seemed to be successful, which is great

Yet another summer has come to a close at Southport Yacht Club, where long term memories were made, sailing was taught and bonds were built that could last a lifetime.

This final week was very warm with very light wind, which was very lucky for those taking their swim tests, Vincent Duncan, Lucia Kielpinska and Dominic Duncan all passed their swim test with ease as they cooled off from the August heat and humidity.

In 1981, a handful of survivors of domestic violence started an organization they called New Hope for Women. Ten hotline volunteers offered support to those experiencing domestic violence in Knox County. The agency officially became a nonprofit on August 18, 1981, and hired a part-time director. By 1982, the hotline was fully staffed, allowing victims and concerned others to reach an advocate round-the-clock. At its founding, it was one of six domestic violence projects in Maine.

There was a kitchen fire in my apartment on July 5.

My neighbors rallied to get everyone (and their pets) safely out of the 17 apartment complex.

The fire department and ambulance arrived within minutes of the initial call..

Community Resource Council’s Community Navigator Hannah Corkum, Holly Stover, our representative to the Maine Legislature, and the American Red Cross were active in coordinating temporary housing for me.
