A rainy Sunday. If it continues that means a Scrabble day in this house, a dog resistant to the daily wanderings, and sleepy cats. The birds are not deterred from the feeders though pickings are slim as Little Hands, the raccoon, made a visit, dragging a feeder into the woods, the trail of seed pleasing the turkey hens and their poults; always some joy on the nature front. Bunchberries have opened, adding splendor to the woodland floor, daisies waving their cheerful faces among the tall grasses in open fields moving with the winds brought by the sea. I am sure all veterans have different reactions, feelings, memories around Memorial Day. This year was a little different for me because I was attending my grandson’s high school graduation in Maryland and, for the first time since moving to Boothbay Harbor over 25 years ago, I wasn’t part of the parade. But by not being in Boothbay, it had me thinking differently about the meaning of the day and what it means to me personally.

Spencer Pottle, 19, was born and raised in Boothbay and has been participating in the Boothbay Region YMCA’s signature Y-Arts program since he was seven years old. He recently finished his first year at Florida Southern College where he is majoring in musical theater. There he continues to hone his talent while remaining the same kind, thoughtful, and outstanding young person the Boothbay community has watched grow up on stage through the years.

Edgecomb Fire Rescue responded to 25 calls in May, compared with 14 calls in April. May calls included three fires, 17 medical emergencies (ME), four motor vehicle accidents (MVA), and one other call for trees down blocking road. For the year-to-date, we have responded to 109 calls.

We participated in a joint training exercise with Wiscasset, Westport Island, and Alna fire departments on Search and Rescue, hosted by the Westport fire department. The weekend weather wasn’t perfect, but it was better than expected and sister Karen and I had fun out on the water. Her son, Brian, who is an engineer and works on power plants in various locations, came home from El Salvador for a surprise visit as the job there was shut down for a couple of weeks. Great to see him before he heads back! Brian is impressed by how modern the geothermal plants are in El Salvador. Prior to this project, he was at a coal fired plant in West Virginia. Enough said.

The first crop of baby American robins were out of the nest in our neighborhood by the last week of May. We have enjoyed hearing their squeals and seeing the gangly youngsters, with their short tails and brown spotted breasts, looking a little like a punked-out version of the adults.

But we hope you make yourself take the time. Have a say and then, no matter who is elected, or who is nominated via a primary, or which way an issue goes June 9, you will have done your best to help make the outcome whatever you felt it should be.

Daughter, son, nephews … now a granddaughter is graduating from Boothbay Region High School next week. Hard to believe – zero to 18 in a blink of an eye. Good luck to you, Ella, and your classmates.

I guess I am getting old but the memories of what graduation means at BRHS have been pleasant – except perhaps the gym usually being hot and humid, or a long, long speech by an administrator.
