It wasn’t a gym class and they weren’t just enjoying the sunshine and 60F temperature.
The group was delivering a special package to Ray Ruby, executive director of the Maine Cancer Foundation.
Dressed in pink shirts, the Boothbay Region Elementary School students and teachers Cordelia Chase, Elizabeth Tilton and Soren Barker, walked from the school to Whale Park on Commercial Street in a show of solidarity and to present $1,500 to Ruby and the MCF.
Said Chase, “We have been collecting donations for the past few weeks during our Wildcat Wednesday (part of a new Middle School Advisory Program). We have had amazing support through parents, BRES/BRHS staff, and community. The eighth graders thank everyone for their sponsorship.”
One of the students, Sawyer Piercy, who personally raised $530 of the total, presented the money to Ruby following an introduction of the fundraiser by Barker and a round of applause from everyone.
“It is so wonderful to see young people engaged in projects like this,” said Ruby. “I thank you and the Foundation thanks you and I hope you continue to help others.”
“We aren’t always available to respond to such presentations but we couldn’t say no to this one with young people involved,” said Ruby.
