Horses were a hit, part II
For the second time this year, residents of St. Andrews Village Retirement Community got up close and personal with horses, this time on Friday, Oct. 23.
Back in mid-August, Ella Watts of Burke’s Island Farm in Boothbay, along with her father, Robbie, brought two horses to the Village where about 50 residents got to greet, brush and feed the Wattses’ horses, Jimmy and Marley. Ella also works at the Village and she and Resident Services Coordinator Sarah Hackler set up the visit.
On Friday, 11 residents took a field trip to Burke’s, located on Route 27, where Ella and Burke’s owner Amy Reny gave them a grand tour of the 12-year-old facility and the 16 horses being boarded there.
The hour-long visit under sunny but breezy conditions saw the residents view the paddocks, petting those horses who came to the fencing, and asking questions about the various horses on display. Ella and Amy then brought two horses – 26-year-old Ruby and Memphis – into the barn where the Village visitors got to meet them face-to-face.
The farm offers lessons for children and adults who compete at horse shows in the spring and summer. Ella also showed the visitors the riding facility – where it was decorated for the next day’s Halloween event. Ella, who works with mostly adults, explained that Amy, who works mainly with kids, has provided a safe and affordable place.
Many of the visitors related their experiences with horses when they were at a younger age to Ella, Amy and the newspaper.
As one of the three farm cats roamed around the barn, the visitors then walked down to the lower paddocks to meet Jimmy and Marley again. Amy also brought out for viewing the lone pony being boarded.
The nine women and two men from the Village, as well as their bus driver and Resident Services employee Kim Baxley, took many photos of the horses to relive their visit.
