Community Christmas dinner draws over 120
A Christmas Day tradition returned to the Boothbay region as over two dozen volunteers served a free feast to about 120 community members. On Dec. 25, organizers describe this year’s turnout as one of the largest ever as community members dined on turkey, ham, pork, mashed potatoes, stuffing and several other traditional holiday meal offerings.

Morgan Mitchell’s Creative Flow Circles got their start while she and husband Andrei Bazaiac were living in Portland. Morgan was working at an ad agency and observed how mentally drained her creative counterparts were. Sarah Wilde, a local artist from Walpole, will be having a solo show of her latest paintings at the Miles Memorial Hospital during the months of January and February 2024.
Devoting herself to serious painting for the last 16 years, she is known for her expressionistic/bold landscapes and seascapes.

The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor hosted its annual holiday potluck dinner and carol sing Wednesday night, Dec. 20, featuring Kevin Kiley and Friends – John Adams, Devin Dukes, Jason Hersom and Lynne McGhee.

As most residents across the region coped without power Dec. 19, some found a warm welcome at Southport Memorial Library.

A classic Christmas tale came to life at Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta in the first of two performances (Dec. 14-15) by the Boothbay Region Y Arts Youth Actors on Thursday, Dec. 14.

Sixteen students at Southport Central School presented their Winter Concert, “Once Upon a Winter’s Tale ...” for a packed Southport Town Hall Wednesday evening, Dec. 12.
A story of Santa and Mrs. Claus, two elves, a sleigh driver and a fox, wolf, hare and Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer was interwoven during the eight-song concert before the concluding sing-along of familiar Christmas songs with the audience.

Shortly before the arrival of Santa and company aboard the Novelty, the Gardens Aglow Community Lighting Contest winners were announced by Gretchen Ostherr, president and CEO of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

Holiday fair was festive and yummy
Known affectionately as the “pie ladies” here in Boothbay Harbor, these talented women at the Methodist church cooked, baked, and created gift baskets, ornaments, wreaths and more for the Dec. 2 Christmas Time Fair.
Cathy Blake said they fed around 65 people. “We had lots of shoppers that didn’t eat. We didn’t run out of any food – but our gift baskets flew out the door!”

Saturday, Dec. 2 was a busy day for early holiday festivities around Boothbay Harbor as several venues were bustling.
The Congregational Church was filled with cheer for its annual Christmas Fair in Fellowship Hall. North Pole Express delivers holiday cheer
The North Pole Express was loaded with the Christmas spirit at Boothbay Railway Village over the first weekend of December. The train took its first seasonal trip Dec. 2 as dozens of families bundled up in the open-air cars or cozied up inside heated ones. Kids wrote letters to Santa, which they delivered in person on the journey. Afterwards, they could enjoy hot chocolate and s’mores by the fire or just explore the decorations around the village.

Despite the rain on Saturday morning, Nov. 18, the Boothbay Harbor Early Bird Sale still drew great crowds. Most of the people of all ages dressed in their pajamas to shop for bargains in area stores.

Food Pantry Thanksgiving vouchers available
The Boothbay Region Food Pantry will make Thanksgiving vouchers available to Food Pantry clients on Saturday, Nov. 11. The vouchers, made to order for each pantry family, may be picked up between 9 and 11 a.m. at the food pantry. They are valid for use at the local Hannaford and must be used by the end of November. Christmas vouchers will be provided to pantry families from 9 to 11 a.m. on Dec. 16.

McHale gives talk on holiday lighting design at BHML
Brent McHale, horticulturist and lighting designer for Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (CMBG), gave a lecture on lighting design, installation and safety at Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library Saturday, Nov. 4, followed by holiday lights installation on the property. About 30 people attended the talk.

Community erects buoy tree at pier one
Dozens of community members gathered Saturday, Nov. 4, at pier one to construct Boothbay Harbor’s 900-plus buoy tree.
Eric Gimbel, Jay Quinn and Ren Jones began installation of the wood frame at 10 a.m. By noon, organizers, volunteers and onlookers were ready to hang buoys using zip ties and heavy gauge cable wire. Brief history of Harbor Lights Festival, now Boothbay Lights
The region’s holiday celebration began as The Scottish Christmas Walk with bagpipers playing highland marches and slow airs filled the streets of the downtown. It was a three-day event, Dec. 6-8, 1985, sponsored by Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce.
There was a parade, Christmas craft fair at the YMCA, an open house at Boothbay Region Historical Society displaying fine china, furniture, and other wares previously owned by many of the original Scot settlers of the region. Local merchants and restaurants offered special promotions and discounts and lodging owners were encouraged to offer weekend packages.
Santa was brought to the Town Landing aboard one of Eliot Winslow’s tugs. After disembarking, Santa was greeted by Town Crier Brud Pierce and a group of pipers to a Boothbay Harbor fire truck to lead the Christmas parade that culminated in a piping event at the high school fields on Townsend Avenue.
A 20-foot Christmas tree was donated by Irving and Jane Conley, for the Library lawn, and decorated to reflect coastal and Scot themes – red lights and ribbons with large scallop shells (created by Bill Harris of the Boothbay Register). There was a tree lighting with Santa accompanied by the Carousel Theatre singers to lead the caroling.
In 2016, Harbor Lights became part of Boothbay Lights, which encompasses all of the region’s holiday events!
