It was a standing room only event for most but not all. BILL PEARSON/Boothbay RegisterOn Dec. 6, Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library's 40-foot fir tree went from dark to light. Santa Claus illuminated it by waving his magic wand, and poof, the giant tree illuminated Christmas spirit.
The library's annual Christmas tree lighting drew a large crowd which included other notable Christmas celebrities besides Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Buddy the Elf attended as did some other of Santa's elves from the North Pole.
Larry Lobster Claus also showed up sharing his unique style of Christmas spirit. The event also attracted a Massachusetts couple who came to Boothbay Harbor to celebrate their wedding anniversary. David and Buffy Henry of Boston have attended previous Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library Christmas tree lightings, and enjoy returning each year.
Despite a chilly night, the Henrys again made it to Boothbay Harbor. So why do they attend so often? "Christmas," said Buffy Henry. Her husband added, "We came up for the celebration and to have some fun. We love Boothbay Harbor."
While driving up Route One, the couple stopped in Oqunquit and purchased Christmas bulb necklaces which they wore at the tree lighting. "They (Ogunquit) do 'Christmas by the Sea' down there. We bought them at a shop. We've been to a couple, and it's a blast!"
Pre-and post-Christmas tree lighting, the crowd was entertained by a Boothbay Region Elementary School choir of students in grades 5-8.
