Elizabeth F. Klein
Elizabeth Flynt “Betsy” Klein, 82, of Wiscasset, Maine, passed away on Oct. 25, 2026, after navigating a period of declining health.
Born in Augusta, Maine, on July 17, 1944, to Barbara (Burr) and Horton Flynt, she was the youngest of three sisters. Betsy moved to Falmouth, Maine, during her elementary school years. Her social personality flourished in high school, where she was class secretary, played basketball, and graduated as salutatorian from Falmouth High School. Her love of travel blossomed during her time in Falmouth with two trips to Europe, once with the People-to-People organization and once to stay with her sister Pat and brother-in-law John for a summer.
She met her best friend and the love of her life, Earl “Skip” Klein, at the University of Connecticut. They eloped on Nov. 6, 1965, after coordinating family dynamics proved to be too much of a hassle for a wedding. After welcoming a daughter, they made their longtime home in West Hartford, Connecticut, where they lived until retirement. They celebrated 60 loving years of marriage before her passing.
When her children were in elementary school, Betsy returned to the workforce as secretary of the West Hartford United Methodist Church and then returned to her medical assistant training during her children’s high school years. She was incredibly proud of her time as the administrative assistant to the Head of the Infectious Disease Department at the University of Connecticut Medical School.
Betsy spent time growing up with her family in Ocean Point, Maine. She and Skip were able to purchase a small cottage there early in their marriage, and it became a foundation for Betsy’s social and active lifestyle. She made best friends, played tennis, kayaked, and raised her children on the rocky shore of Maine. From the day school ended in the spring until it started in the fall, Betsy and the children spent their summers at Ocean Point, with Skip joining them on weekends.
Betsy and Skip spent 12 years after retirement “snow birding” in Tucson, Arizona. As a highly social butterfly who invented Fear of Missing Out before it became “FOMO,” she made loads of friends. She was a highly active volunteer for the Humane Society and had several “foster fail” rescues who enjoyed being spoiled by her in their senior years.
Her four grandchildren were a particularly bright spot in her life. She loved having them around as individuals and as an unruly group, often instigating shenanigans that occasionally led to tears. Sometimes hers. They all enjoyed trips without parents to Tucson or Ocean Point to enjoy “kid time” with Mammy and Grumpy.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret “Peg” Haskell and Patricia “Pat” Waldman. She is survived by her husband, Skip Klein; daughter Jennifer Klein; son Peter Klein and his wife Barbara (Foote); grandchildren Jo Klein, Madeline Mazjanis and her wife Alison Murray, Jessica (Klein) Reynolds and her husband Ryan, and Peter Mazjanis; and great-grandchildren Nicholas (Nico) and James Reynolds. She loved her extended family and friends with as much fervor as she did her immediate family and had deep relationships with her brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, many cousins and life-long friends.
Betsy lived life big and did everything with joy, energy, and presence. She loved and was loved. She will be deeply missed and long remembered.
