Before(?) you vote in Wiscasset
If you have already voted in Wiscasset on the Nov. 3 questions, thank you, well done and feel free to move on to some more scintillating read. For the rest of Wiscasset, we hope you will stay on this short (?) one.
Time and again, after a town vote, selectmen and others who speak up in selectboard meetings tell about people saying they didn't know and/or understand what they were voting on.
Now, I know our best-read items are usually the obituaries, crimes and sometimes controversies, as evidenced most any week in our "Top 10" at wiscassetnewspaper.com. So, even I am not naive enough to think, "Hey, people who vote probably read our news, letters to the editor, and town-created items we run, such as the voter's guide now online and on this week's page 5 of the front section."
Well, I might be that naive naturally, but over the years have become so disillusioned as to really think, "I know we are repeatedly telling what the questions are and how they came about, etc., and so is the town; but regardless, there are after the fact still going to be what always seem to be a fair number of people saying they saw these matters for the first time when they voted." And then I think, "At least they voted."
If possible, when you vote, avoid being one of the surprised.
Good news: Available in print and free online are those news articles, letters to the editor, and town-created items, such as the also aforementioned voter's guide. Don't want to read it for free on our site? You can also access that voter guide for free on the town website. From the wiscasset.gov homepage, click on "Absentee Ballots & Election Information Available," then, besides all the other information you will find there, click on "Special Town Meeting Voter Guide," and there it is, explaining each Nov. 3 question. As with Wiscasset's annual town meeting at the polls in June, this one is also called a town meeting even though items are decided by secret ballot rather in open assembly.
Below are links to several of the news articles from recent months and some further back on the topics the ballot questions involve, and more. As for the letters, find them in recent print editions and our "Talk" section online.
Thank you for whatever time you are able to give or have given to reading any of the items mentioned. And then make time, Nov. 3 or before, for one of the most important things the U.S. does.
Vote.
