Approximately 42 revelers attended, some — including Commodore Steve Marin and his lovely wife, Jen — properly attired in traditional lederhosen and dirndl. Others, sporting varying degrees of “authentic” Bavarian attire, enthusiastically embraced the spirit of the afternoon.
A highlight of the festivities was a traditional Masskrugstemmen, or stein-holding competition, with separate contests for men and women. Not surprisingly, Past Commodore Aaron Rugh bested the men’s field, while Anne Banger, wife of Fleet Captain Jeff Banger, held out — quite literally — to claim the women’s prize.
The club’s October gathering has been hosted for the past several years by Rear Commodore Scott Warren and Catherine Plourde at their home on Seal Harbor in Spruce Head. The setting offers beautiful views and invariably inspires stories of cruising the Mussel Ridge Channel — despite its infamous fog.
The Down East Yacht Club hosts monthly gatherings throughout the fall and winter in both Maine and Florida, giving members opportunities to stay connected after the Maine boating season winds down. The November gathering will be held Nov. 14 at the home of John and Sharon Ryan.
