Veterans banner program closes in on 700 displays
The Veterans Banner Program is alive and well on the Boothbay peninsula! A special thanks to the public works departments of Boothbay, Boothbay, the Edgecomb Fire Department and Gerry Gamage of Southport for mounting nearly 700 veterans banners on telephone poles to honor their service. A few statistics might be of interest.
There are now 690 unduplicated banners in the region, 37 of which are women veterans. There are 180 in Boothbay; 215 in Boothbay Harbor; 187 in Southport; 82 in East Boothbay; and 26 in Edgecomb. Two hundred forty two of these veterans served during World War II; 108 were on active duty during the Korean War; 188 were in the service during the Vietnam War; and 79 on duty during Desert Storm or the War on Terror.
Two hundred forty two of our veterans served in the Army, 234 in the Navy. There are 63 Marines, 52 Coast Guard, and 62 in the U.S.A.F. along with an additional 38 U.S. Army Air Corps veterans in WWII. Five were members of the Merchant Marine (WWII), and several allied veterans from England, Canada and the Netherlands.
What name appears most on banners? Gray with 14, Lewis with 13, and Tibbetts with 12. There are 11 Reeds and Blakes, and 10 Shermans and Smiths.
New banner orders will be taken and produced during the summer and fall, with a final cutoff date for the year on Sept. 7-Labor Day. If interested, please contact one of the following Committee members:
