A free brief folk revival with Allan Winkler

Wednesday, July 01, 2026 - 05:00 pmThe music of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary, Joni Mitchell and others will be wafting down from the historic bar at the Boothbay Harbor Opera House this season. On Wednesday, July 1 Professor Allan Winkler will present a musical lecture focusing on the great folk artists who helped shape a generation.
Allan Winkler is a retired American History professor, who taught for almost 50 years at Yale University, the University of Oregon, Miami University of Ohio, and various universities overseas. Author of 13 books, his last work was a biography of Pete Seeger, the banjo-playing father of American folk music, which combined his love of music and history. A guitar-playing musician himself, he has performed at the Princeton Folk Music Society, Harvard University, the University of Maryland, Purdue University, Helsinki University and other institutions around the country and abroad. His talk at the Opera House will include a mix of stories and music.
This is a free community event, doors opening at 4:30 p.m. with music and stories beginning at 5pm, in the upstairs bar. Donations to support the Opera House are welcome at the door. Beverages available for sale, cash only, and audience members are asked not to bring their own food or drink inside the Opera House. The event is appropriate for all ages.
