Cuffed for a cause
Getting arrested isn’t something most people look fondly on, but what if it was for a good cause? Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce is holding a “Bail & Jail” fundraiser for its historic trolley on July 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
You pay a fee, ranging from $25 to $100, and pick a faux charge for your nominee's "arrest." These crimes range from minor offenses, such as feeding seagulls or failing to return your shopping cart at Hannaford's, to the most serious, “stealing a Windjammer.”
The nominee will be served their arrest warrant with the option to pay the suggested bail amount ($250 - $1,000) or ride the trolley to raise money from fellow passengers or by phoning a friend. The on-board judge may also reduce the bail amount for good behavior.
“It's all in fun,” said Lisa Walby, Chamber executive director.
All funds will go towards the continued operation of the trolley, which Walby said costs about $25,000 per year. While most regular costs like upkeep, insurance and drivers are covered by sponsors, the vehicle has needed large-scale maintenance this past year, and the fundraiser will provide an extra cushion for when these issues arise.
Walby believes it's important to keep the trolley functioning because it's both a beloved, nostalgic fixture for locals and tourists, and serves an invaluable community function by providing free rides around the area for seasonal employees.
“It's the heartbeat of our Boothbay Harbor community to have the trolley.”
