Stop the noise
Dear Editor:
If you know anyone who belongs to the Southport Yacht Club, please tell them to cease using a megaphone to shout orders and corrections to the youth sailing program students.
I’ve worked on the west side of Southport for 40 years in several capacities for private home and property owners. For years we’ve heard the called out instructions from coaches of the youth sailing classes at the yacht club based in Cozy Harbor.
This year, some in the membership decided to authorize the use of a loud megaphone for the instructor to call out order’s and instructions to the students. It sounds like a third rate carnival act. Sound travels over water and the shouting can be heard over a mile away and can be even heard inside buildings. It is ridiculous and intolerable and needs to stop now.
Instead of hearing the breeze in the trees, the waves and gulls, one hears some guy shouting through a megaphone for hours. Many property owners (read that: taxpayers) depend on rental income from cottages on the coast to help defray the cost of taxes and upkeep. Renters seek the Rachel Carson serenity and peace of being right on the coast of Maine enjoying the sunsets without this noise nuisance. I can just imagine the negative comments listed online of renters who had to listen to that racket for hours advise: “pretty location but the noise nuisance is intolerable; don’t waste your money.”
If you know any members of this club, please implore them to stop the noise nuisance now.
