Elizabeth M. Doughty
Elizabeth Mary Tonely Doughty passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Lee was born on May 30, 1942 in Dorchester, Massachusetts to Margaret Fitzgerald and Martin Joseph Tonely.
Lee attended St. Anne’s School in Dorchester and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Roxbury in 1960. A lifelong lover of sports, she played half-court basketball and was MVP of the softball team. As she would say, she played all the sports she was offered. Following graduation, Lee worked for many years in cancer research at Arthur D. Little, a job she took pride in and where she met many lifelong friends.
Despite her roots as a city girl, Lee was eager for adventure. She was an active member of the Pole Cats Ski Club in Jackson, New Hampshire and traveled extensively to ski with the group. It was on one fortuitous ski trip to Sugarloaf that Lee answered the prayers of Bruce Henry Doughty. The two crossed paths at the Red Stallion Inn après and the rest is history. Bruce and Lee married on March 20, 1971 and eventually settled in Harpswell, Maine.
Lee’s life was full of joy, family, travel, friends, sports, creativity, and generosity. Lee poured her efforts into providing unlimited opportunities for her daughters Katie and Kristen to pursue their interests and supported Bruce as he built Washburn & Doughty from the ground up. She took pride in the accomplishments of her family and supported in her way; making christening bottles for boat launches and homemade post-game cookies, which were a food version of motherly love and endeared Mrs. D to many sports teams over the years.
The family took extensive trips sailing along the coast of Maine and many islands of the Caribbean. Not having grown up on the water, Lee mastered life onboard and her husband’s enthusiasm for the ocean like a champ while more than once asking, “Bruce, why are we the only ones out here?” The family enjoyed the adventure of a lifetime in 1991 when they spent a year living aboard the family sailboat, Tarquin, and sailing from Maine to the Bahamas.
In 2004, Lee and Bruce moved from Harpswell to East Boothbay. In her new community, Lee found a wonderful group of friends whom the family loving referred to as the Mah Jong Ladies and the Happy (Rug) Hookers. Lee loved to create colorful, handmade rugs and was a beautiful knitter. She created countless sweaters and hats that she took great pleasure in giving away.
In recent years, Lee and Bruce continued their adventures, taking multiple camper trips all over the country, including many National Parks, as well as cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, South America, Antarctica, and the Caribbean. Together they covered a lot of miles.
Lee’s most pure joy could perhaps be seen in her relationships with her five grandsons and the happiness and pride she took in being a part of their lives and seeing them grow. She loved hearing every one of their stories — long or short, adventurous or mundane — and inspired them with her strength, resilience, gratitude and joy.
Lee is survived by her loving husband Bruce and daughters Katie Doughty Maddox and Kristen Doughty Danaher, the original s/v Tarquin crew; five amazing grandsons, Henry Maddox, Kellan Danaher, Will Maddox, Bruce Danaher and Quinn Danaher; two wonderful son-in-laws Matthew Maddox and Gavin Danaher; beloved sisters Eleanor Correia and Laura Gibbons; and a wonderful and kind extended family. Lee was predeceased by her treasured older brother Joseph Tonely.
Friends and family are invited for a time of visitation on Wednesday, July 30 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay, Maine. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 31 at 2 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
