Edgecomb selectmen considering moving from elected to appointed town officers
Several neighboring towns have changed from elected town officers to appointed ones, and Edgecomb selectmen want to follow suit. On Feb. 3, selectmen debated changing from electing the tax collector, town clerk and treasurer from a one-year, elected position to a one-year, appointed one. Selectman Michael Maxim explained the process would require two votes.
After a lengthy debate, selectmen decided against pursuing the change for this year due to a cramped voting timeline. Instead, selectmen will place the measure on this May's town meeting warrant for voter approval in hopes of enacting it in July 2027.
In other action, selectmen approved a plan to pay for repairs of the recently purchased 2005 American LaFrance fire truck. Potter was allotted $75,000 to find a replacement truck. He found one in Michigan with a $60,000 price tag. He spent $5,000 to transport the vehicle home.
Selectmen authorized the remaining $10,000 in purchase expenses to go towards a $13,278 repair bill. Potter received approval to pay the remaining balance ($3,278) out of the fire department's maintenance account. Potter's travel expenses to Pennsylvania and Oregon ($2,131) were covered from the department's fire truck reserve account.
The town office received a boost in its technological ability from a Coastal Maine Broadband Grant. Edgecomb received a "Meeting Owl," which is a 360-degree camera focusing on the speaker. Selectmen envision using it for Zoom board meetings. A monitor, screens and a projector were also received.
The town also received another grant due to efforts by Potter and resident Karen Flynn. The two applied for a $2,035 matching water handling grant.
Selectmen voted, 3-0, to approve a liquor license for All-in-One Market at 25 U.S. Route 1. The store plans on opening later this week.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17 in the conference room.
