'An Evening of Stories; Tales from retired bridge tenders Duane and Dwight Lewis' Aug. 11
On Monday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at Southport Town Hall, 361 Hendricks Hill Road (Rte. 27), Southport, Duane and Dwight Lewis will share fascinating and unusual experiences from their family’s long history, tending to local bridges. Along with their father Norman Lewis and sister Ruth, the family logged nearly 150 combined years working on the Southport, South Bristol, and Trevett Bridge. From 1940 until Duane retired in 2013, there was always a Lewis tending the bridge; Dwight retired in 2012.
The Southport Bridge is one of the few remaining movable bridges in Maine. This type of bridge, once common, is now rare. Today it is sometimes easy to take for granted the importance and convenience of these vital connectors, and many visitors know little about the actual workings of the bridges.
