Class Reunion
I celebrated with my high school classmates on Saturday, July 26, 50 years, or approximately 18,300 days after we graduated from Boothbay Region High School. As published in this newspaper, there were 30 of us, plus our exchange student calling via Facetime, who got together for another reunion. It was a blast and it was nice to see everyone – some we haven’t seen for many years.
As I pondered the celebration the next day, I felt kind of melancholy as I was remembering a statement from a friend that the 50-year reunion was very important as “you never know if you might not see them again” given everyone’s ages. Not a comforting thought, but it is reality, since we lost two members of the Class of 1975 already this year.
I also felt kind of empty because you don’t get to talk to everyone in a three-hour span, with music playing and individuals huddled around each other reminiscing and sharing laughs.
I thought back to the class prophecy during our Class Day ceremony and wondered if my classmates' lives had been fulfilled the way they intended. Most likely not completely, but it would be nice to get their take on what their lives have been like, since the world has changed a lot in 50 years. I probably would have come away either being less or more melancholy.
Our large, "Boomer" class (93 as freshmen, 75 who graduated) was very congenial as we talked a lot more than kids do today, with cellphones, etc. I am just glad that those of us who got together were able to do so and we hope to do so again soon.
