Suzanne S. Hamblett
Suzanne “Suzie” Stevens Hamblett passed away peacefully on Dec. 24, 2025, surrounded by her family.
She was born on June 25, 1941, in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Raised in Nashua, Suzie was the eldest of four children of Jean Hamilton Stevens and John B. Stevens. Her summers were spent in Ocean Point, Maine, where she enjoyed and created traditions and experiences that continue to this day. She attended Nashua High School and later transferred to the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts, graduating in 1959, forming lasting friendships. After high school, she attended Centenary College in New Jersey.
Suzie married Peter Hamblett on June 25, 1960. They shared 65 years of marriage and raised four children— Andy, Jenifer, Leslie and John. She lived in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and previously in Rye and Manchester, New Hampshire. Summers in Ocean Point remained an important part of her life. Whether it was going out on a picnic or an evening cocktail cruise, Suzie loved sharing her home with anyone who came up the driveway and sat on her porch. This past Fourth of July, Suzie and Pete served as co–grand marshals of the Ocean Point Horribles Day Parade, which was celebrated by her entire family.
Suzie began a career in real estate and worked for many years with Tate and Foss. She was always active in her community, serving on many boards, including but not limited to the Portsmouth Music Hall, Greater Seacoast United Way, New Hampshire Public Television, Wilson Chapel in Ocean Point and the YWCA of Manchester. She served on the Board of Managers and was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and the Moffatt Ladd House. Suzie was 1st Vice President of the Piscataqua Garden Club and chaired many committees and was awarded for 30 years of service by the club. Suzie loved flowers and floral arranging so much that she studied and became an Accredited Floral Design Judge and judged various flower shows throughout the east coast. Suzie was also an accomplished needlepointer, making numerous pillows and ornaments that adorned her home and her children's homes.
Pete and Suzie welcomed anyone who stopped by, always with bowls of themed M&M’s, Swedish Fish, and her well-known chocolate chip cookies.
She was her children’s and grandchildren’s biggest fan, traveling up and down the East Coast to attend their sporting events, always with a bag of “gunchers” to share afterward. She and Pete had an ongoing backgammon competition and always had a Yahtzee game ready to be played with anyone who sat at their kitchen table.
Suzie is survived by her husband, Peter Hamblett; her four children and their spouses— Andy and Meagan Hamblett, Jenifer and Scott Parker, Leslie and DJ Gamache, and John and Barb Hamblett; and her 13 grandchildren who affectionately called her Sooz: Jack, Devon, Peter, Ellie, Phoebe, Grace, Lincoln, Willy, Charlie, Helen, Johnny, Christopher, and Silas. She is also survived by her sister, Holly Hornor, and numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and a wide circle of friends who will forever carry her laughter, her stories, and her spirit in their hearts.
She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Carolyn Stevens Tew; and her brother, John B. Stevens Jr.
A celebration of Suzie’s life will be held on Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at South Church, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. To honor Sooz, guests are encouraged to wear a pop of color. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a charity of one’s choosing.
