Sprucewold Column: Arrivals, meetings and more
We are nearing the end of July, summer is halfway over! Our family has begun to arrive, my brother from New Zealand has already been here for a week. Our youngest daughter and her family will come on Thursday from Massachusetts (they come every weekend!). Our son flies in on Friday from North Carolina and our daughter-in-law and the three granddaughters are driving and will arrive on Saturday, Our oldest daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter arrive from Rhode Island on Friday, as well. Our middle daughter and her husband live on Barters Island. And then there are my other two brothers and their families here from Washington and New York for our annual summer get together. This year it will end with our dad’s celebration of life on Saturday, Aug. 9 at the United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m.
Don't forget the annual meetings: Linekin Heights Association at 9 a.m., the Sprucewold Association at 10:30 a.m., and don’t forget proxies if you cannot attend. The potluck supper is on the Green from 5 to 7 p.m. We have two new eight foot picnic tables for your dining pleasure. Remember if your last name begins with A-N: bring a savory dish and last name begins with O-Z bring a dessert.
The Sprucewold Beach Club annual meeting will be on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 8:30 a.m. at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church Hall. Please get a proxy to another member if you are unable to attend.
Games on the Green was cancelled last Friday because of predicted downpours and thunderstorms but will be held on the LHA former tennis court on Friday, Aug. 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. This week: cornhole and croquet. Bring a snack and a drink for yourself!
We have three associations that Sprucewolders can join depending on where they live or if they have shares. The Sprucewold Association (SA) is our social group formed in 1927. We sponsor at least two annual parties for summer colony: the opening and the potluck. Our newest activity is Games on the Green. There are annual membership dues of $75.00 that help support the annual directory, street signs, Nahanada Park, and the Crooked Pine Float. If you have a dinghy or other water craft at the float or in the float area, there is an additional $75 fee. There is a mooring field off the float for SA members.
The Sprucewold Beach Club (SBC) was established in 1971 when the owners of the Sprucewold Lodge sold the beach to a group of Sprucewold residents. They set up a group with a maximum of 100 memberships. Over time many of the memberships have been kept with the original owners but while there are occasional memberships sold, they must be sold only to Sprucewold residents. The SBC manages the parking lot area, the beach swim area, the seawall, the kayak racks, the pier and dock, and hires a beach attendant. Only SBC members can moor their boats in the mooring field off the beach.
The Linekin Heights Association (LHA) has a condominium structure. Owners separately own their cabins and lots but collectively own the Green, shuffleboard court, former tennis court, miscellaneous land, and the waste disposal and treatment plant. The cabins that formerly belonged to the Sprucewold Lodge have covenants such as no fences, cabins and trim should remain original colors, among others. Several additional cabins were able to take advantage of proximity and are LHA sewer only members.
The Linekin Green is the original footprint of the Sprucewold Lodge that burned down in 1930. The present lodge was the Annex to the original lodge and was saved from the fire when they cut down the wooden walkway that connected the two buildings. The Dining Hall was built after the fire in 1932.
There are other sewer associations and private sewers but no others have HOA style rules or property.
PLease remember to get your 2025 directory, they will be available at the annual meetings and at the potluck supper.
