Southport Junior Yacht Club
It was another great week at the Southport Junior Yacht Club! Everyone enjoyed some beautiful weather on the water and had so much fun sailing.
We only had two new program members this week, one being a new member of the Munchkin Mariners. Eloise Hawke braved the cold Cozy Harbor water alone while Ella Beth Biggs completed a 10-second dip in the water, and both of them warmed up with hot cocoa afterwards. As a part of the Munchkin Mariners group, Ella Beth had fun this week travelling to David’s Island and making watercolor paintings with Jen Phippen!
The morning class sailors had lots of fun this week, sailing up the Pratt’s Island shore and across the Sheepscott. Additionally, on Friday, the young sailors got all dressed up for our yearly pirate day! They travelled to Powderhorn Island and searched for a hidden pirate treasure. Gunner Ferguson and Kemper Faught found the treasure and shared it with the rest of the morning class to finish a great week!
The afternoon class had a great week full of relaxing sailing, as there were no regattas to attend. Both 420s and Optis were able to finish their July racing series and complete the first race days of their August racing series.
On Tuesday, the 420s were able to complete four exciting races, and Rachel Phippen and Logan Snyder came in 1st place with 6 points, Ily Harrington and Morgan Donahue came in 2nd place with 12 points, and Nate Phippen and Graydon Smith came in 3rd place with 13 points. On Friday, there was light wind, so the 420 sailors could only complete 3 races. This day ended with Rachel Phippen and Logan Snyder in 1st with 6 points, Ily Harrington and Morgan Donahue in 2nd with 7 points, and Nate Phippen and Liam Donahue in 3rd with 8 points. We are excited to see how the August racing series will continue!
The first Opti race day of the week included three great races and ended with Chapman Brinegar in 1st place with 8 points, Paige Smith in 2nd with 11 points, and James Allison tied in 3rd with 11 points. Their second day of racing also had three races, with James Allison in 1st with 6 points, Genevieve Bunge in 2nd with 7 points, and Theo Stone in 3rd with 11 points.
Our amazing week ended with the SYC Dance for sailors ages 13-18, who all had an amazing time dancing and enjoying the company of friends!
Next week, four 420 boats will travel to the Portland Yacht Club for the Maine State 420 regatta. We will also be having another ice cream social on Thursday, July 31 at 7 p.m. Please join us for more fun and sweet treats!
