Southport Column: Missing cat, upcoming events and more
Music wafted over the west side of the island on Saturday night as the Dogfish Head Brewery’s 30th Anniversary Party took place at the Southport General Store. I listened from my deck and thought about how to begin the column this week, and I decided on this, a lost cat poster seen at the post office:
"Our beloved cat Mac was last seen 7/12 at 6 p.m. He is a black tiger cat with white chest and white paws. If you find him or see him, please call or text (207) 633-2056. CASH REWARD"
Mac has been missingover two weeks now, he is a resident of Dogfish Head Road and has lived a happy life there for about seven years, where he is now, nobody is sure, but his owners would very much like to be reunited with him. Many visitors and residents walk the loopso, I ask everyone to keep an eye open for Mac. If you have an out building on your propertyperhaps, he sought refuge in it, please check, let us see if we can help as a community to bring Mac back to his comfortable and loving home.
The Southport Memorial Library will have a special program during storytime this Wednesday, The Owls of Maine. Beginning at 10 a.m., a naturalist will provide a talk about these wonderful night creatures and will also have a few live ones for attendees to meet, I for one am very excited about this, hope you can add it to your schedule.
Monday, the 4th of August will have two events which overlap a bit, but if you would like, you could do both. Beginning at 5 p.m. all Southporters, their families and guests are invited to attend the Southport Island Association Annual Picnic. It is being hosted by Emily and MacKenzie Hurd at 30 Cozy Harbor Road and will feature all the classic picnic fare, as well as the dishes that will be brought by you to share with your neighbors. These can be salads, desserts, baked beans, finger food, or any goodies that you would care to make for the event. There will be seltzers, and lemonade, but it is a BYOB. The cost is $10, parking is limited so please carpool if you can, and bring lawn chair(s) if possible. For more information and/or to volunteer to help, call or text Janet Duchaine at 860-484-9006.
The other event being held on Monday the 4th of August is free and taking place at Town Hall, 361 Hendricks Hill Road. Join the Friends of the Southport Historical Society for “Cookbooks as Historical Evidence,” a three-part event including a talk, exhibit, and a sampling of food from 18th and 19th century recipes, exhibit will feature cookware pieces from the Hendricks Hill Museum collection, and the speaker will be Marieke Van Der Steenhoven, Librarian for Special Collections and Engagement, Bowdoin College. She has a vast knowledge of the over 700 early American cookbooks in the college’s collection, and will discuss those as evidence of the development of American social movements and culture. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the exhibit and tastings, with the lecture to follow at 7 p.m.
We should all be looking forwardto Thursday, Aug. 7, beginning at 9 a.m., the Southport Memorial Library will be holding its Book and Bake Sale. This annual event is always something to look forward to, not only are there a plethora of sweets and savories to buy for yourself or to share, but many, many wonderful books topurchase as well. All proceeds will go directly to the library, so it is winwin. An event not to be missed. If you have generously offered to bake, or make something for this event, it can be dropped off at the library between 3-4 on Wednesday, or between 8:15-8:30 on Thursday, please list your ingredients.
The mailbox for stories you might want to have shared in the column has been hung at the Southport General Store, I will check it Sunday at noon, feel free to drop me a note with pertinent information.
Find your pleasure on the island, walking, swimming, basking, reading, working, whatever it is you do here, treat with care, stay well, keep an outeye for Mac and May Peace Be With You All.
