This fall, Coastal Senior College (CSC) offers a new course, “Warrior Against Fascism: George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia and 1984” taught by retired local teacher and art dealer Geoffrey Robinson. Registration is now open for this and the other thirteen classes on the fall calendar.

Homage to Catalonia depicts Orwell’s experiences fighting in the Spanish Civil War in 1937. “1984,” published in 1949, is his famous dystopian novel. Students will discuss each work and the interconnections between them.

Classes will meet at the Bremen Library from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays, Sept. 18 through Oct. 20, except that there will be no class on Oct. 2.

Geoffrey Robinson taught English at the secondary level at Samsun Maarif College in Turkey and in Connecticut, and English as a Second Language at the Penobscot School in Rockland. He worked as an art dealer and ran the River Gallery in Damariscotta for 25 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s from Yale University.

CSC, which serves Lincoln and Knox Counties, currently offers classes in literature, history, writing, math, science, and human behavior. Eight classes meet in person, four on Zoom, and one is a hybrid class.

The organization is among a statewide network of 17 volunteer-run Senior Colleges that offer daytime classes and other educational activities primarily for people 50 and over. They provide an opportunity to learn in a congenial, informal atmosphere and to meet fellow learners. Members of one College may take courses in any of the others.
