36ers eliminated from state American Legion tourney
At this year's Maine State American Legion baseball tournament, the Boothbay 36ers didn't capture the championship, but they earned the respect of their baseball peers. In the double elimination tournament, Boothbay lost to No. 1 seed Roderick-Crosby Post 28 of Farmington on July 26, 6-2. On July 27, the 36ers were eliminated by the Central Maine Hurricanes, 10-4.
Following the tournament, Boothbay received the Chappy Nelson Sportsmanship Award. Nelson umpired high school and collegiate baseball for nearly 40 years. He died June 19, 2024. He also worked as the sports equipment manager for Colby and Bowdoin colleges. The award was created by State of Maine Umpires Association to develop good character, sportsmanship and good citizenship for Maine athletes.
"We feel great about this season," manager Adam Harkins said. "We finished 9-7, and ranked fourth in the state along with receiving the Chappy Nelson Sportsmanship Award. I couldn't be more proud of these guys."
Against Roderick-Crosby, the third inning proved costly as the Flyers scored five times, and Boothbay responded twice in the inning's bottom half. Starting pitcher Jacob Watkinson allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits, three walks and struck out three. In relief, Aidan Sanborn pitched 1.2 innings allowing one unearned run, on three hits and struck out three.
Finn Harkins pitched 2.1 innings allowing one earned run on one hit, and struck out one. Liam Jacobs pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing no runs or hits, striking out two and walking one. Hayden Chase pitched one-third of an inning and allowed no hits or runs.
Boothbay hitters scored two runs on two hits and left two runners on base. Dom Frisone and Blake Grady each singled.
In the losers' bracket, the Hurricanes scored seven runs in the first inning. Boothbay scored its first run in the fourth, and Central Maine responded with three more of its own in the inning's bottom half scoring three times. Boothbay had six hits with Jacobs leading the way with two singles. Grady doubled and Harkins, Sanborn and Shawn Gamage all singled.
Starting pitcher Grady recorded one out and allowed five earned runs on one hit, and walked four in the first inning. In relief, Harkins pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, walking two and striking out one. Braeden Toothaker pitched one inning, allowed three earned runs, on two hits, walked two and struck one.
"Both teams we played were well prepared. They fielded and hit all game long," Harkins said. "We were fortunate to play some top-caliber teams on a top-caliber field (Mansfield Stadium), it's a level most kids never get to see."
