Juniper and McKown Point
Was it hot enough for you? Jumping off docks, pulling out those fans, gathering for the annual lobster bake and an amazing firework display made for quite a week on the Point.
Tennis is in “full swing” now with busy clinics and a mid-weeknight of triples tennis and a July 3rd parent-child event. Despite the heat there were lots of smiles playing with friends we have missed seeing.
Our grounds hero of the week is Gordon Scowcroft who masterfully completed repairs to the steps leading to the Juniper dock. Thanks to Gordon, they are now much safer.
The undisputed highlight of the summer is the JPVIS annual Lobster Bake. As if by magic, a wonderful breeze emerged as people gathered Saturday afternoon, July 4th in the Whitten field. The cooking crew set up a pop-up tent for shade this year and decorated it with an American flag. Jim Dilley built a new system of rails to get the lobsters in and out of the water to keep them happy prior to cooking. Happy lobsters taste better! The cooking team even has a nifty way to pump sea water up over the rocks to the field for filling the cooking pots. Any doubt that Jim was an engineer? The set up crew this year was robust with regulars and newcomers alike. The heat caused a revised start time of 8 a.m. and everyone still showed up! President Fred Moder greeted attendees, thanked volunteers and invited guests to line up for lobsters, clams and of course plenty of butter. The dessert table was impressive with brownies galore and even lobster shaped cookies. Seeing generations of families enjoying this tradition is a sight to see. While there are those we miss, it is heartwarming to see them remembered with continued traditions. Holly Barnes honored her mom by wearing her lobster earrings and bringing her favorite chocolate cake. Our longstanding organizers Jim Dilley, Jean Dilley and Cindy Gagne once again pulled off a wonderful gathering. Special thanks to Amy Whitten and Dennis Ryan who hosted us again this year. It takes many hard-working volunteers for set up, cooking, serving and clean up and we are grateful.
Saturday night the multitude of boats in the harbor patiently waited and after a curious delay the firework extravaganza began shortly after 9. The show was spectacular and seemed longer than usual- fitting as this year our country had a big birthday. Happy 250 USA!
As a reminder, Joan Warburton-Phibbs hosts a Tuesday morning Pick Me Up Movement class at the Community House at 10. The class works to build strength, balance, mobility, and flexibility. The uplifting class is open to all regardless of age and experience.
Cooler temperatures headed our way so enjoy this beautiful summer on the Point. Plenty of time to create more memories.
