Sprucewold Column: Firewise reminder, games and more
Fall-like weather makes it a bit easier to return to school. Just a bit! As we start to prepare our cabins for the next season, please remember Firewise. Our committee, led by Randy Lehman, Curt Audin and Doug Winter, need to know the amount of brush, trees and branches removed from your property and how long it took you to clean it up. Please email the committee; we get credit for our Firewise program from the state for that information. Our granddaughters look forward to their gardening and forestry work each summer because they earn spending money for the trips to their favorite stores in town.
Games on the Green has ended for the year. We started on Fridays and had many fun afternoons. The entire Rittershaus clan attended the last session on Sunday afternoon of cornhole and croquet. Thank you so much to Carol Ortlip and Leigh Pumilia for beginning and organizing the games.
Bill and Karen Griffin are enjoying a family visit from their sons Michael and Matthew; their daughter Melissa lives nearby with her family.
We need new members for the Nahanada Park committee. In years past we have had an annual volunteer day, gathering to clip bushes, cut in the edges of the path, and spread mulch. The Nahanada Park property was the original salt water pool built in 1937 and formerly owned by Sprucewold Lodge. The Linekin Heights Association acquired the pool in 1970-71 and by 1999 the idea was floated to turn the pool into a park because the upkeep had become cost prohibitive.
In 2003 Nahanada Park was dedicated after major volunteer efforts by many in the Sprucewold community led by the late Richard and Barbara Smith, parents of Susan Smith Jascot and Dan Smith. The Smiths along with the late Laddie Drucker, mother-in-law and grandmother of Laura and Nicole Drucker; Deb Watson; Gretchen Murray; and others raised funds and made it possible for the Sprucewold Association to take ownership of the new park. The park is at the heart of the Sprucewold community and it needs to have a new committee to protect and preserve it. Please note your interest on the Sprucewold Association dues form when you receive it.
A 100% affirmative vote was received by the Sprucewold Association for the passage of our updated by-laws. Thank you all for participating in the vote and a special thank you to our treasurer, Artie Sullivan, for leading the effort and the executive committee for making it happen.
Lyme disease has hit our community hard this year, please remain vigilant checking for ticks. We have had good experiences with the local urgent care. Take care of yourselves out there!
