Morton Mendes
On Nov. 19 1925, Joseph and Mollie Mendes welcomed a son Morton and his twin sister Faye.
He was a proud graduate of Cleveland Heights High School who upon graduation, enlisted in the U.S. Army. In the Army he served in the European theater and was honorably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant. He then enrolled in Western Reserve University, graduating magna cum laude in 1948 with a degree in business administration. He received his master’s degree at Harvard Business School, where he had the honor of being named a Baker Scholar.
Mort joined his father at the Pick-n-Pay supermarkets as director of store operations. He moved on to become president of Tenna Corporation, then the world’s largest manufacturer of manual and power operated antennas, supplying Ford, General Motors and Chrysler.
In 1969 he retired to Coral Gables, Florida where he could enjoy his favorite pastime of boating, while also serving on the board of directors of several companies.
After summering in Maine for many years, the family moved to Maine full time. Mort loved Maine and especially Westport Island. In Maine, he was on the board of the Chocolate Church and the Morris Farm.
Always a lover of animals, he and Patti adopted donkeys and American mustangs. Their home was never without a dog or two.
Mort was a very kind and gentle man who when aware of someone in need, immediately took action.
He leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Patricia (Brower); two sons; three daughters; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his twin sister Faye and his brother Harold.
At his request there will not be a funeral as a private family burial will be held at the North Edgecomb Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of his favorite charities: Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue, 17250 Old Frederick Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771; Little Longears Miniature Donkey Rescue, 1079 Turkey Pit Road, New Oxford, PA 17350.
