Southport Yacht Club
The recent weather on Southport was much to be desired, although those who enjoy getting house projects completed and snuggling up with a book were quite happy. It was indeed a rough weekend for sailing. Both the Norma Smith race and the Round Southport Race were cancelled due to heavy fog and lack of wind. That did not stop us from enjoying an evening together at the club’s annual wine tasting event. Jack Bauman, sommelier, and Anne Mauer hosted an informative evening where we learned about the geography, vineyards, soil and grapes producing “VIN de TABLE”, or “VIN ORDINAIRE” from France and Spain, often heralded as “quality wines meant for everyday use.”
We hope to see all of you at Brunch on Tuesday morning. We invite you to bring a dish but it’s not required. Our social committee brought the brunches back to the calendar because so many members enjoyed the casual atmosphere, delicious dishes and time to sit and connect with members and friends. What is better than a summer morning at the club with the sea breeze billowing in the windows?
On Friday night the club is hosting the annual Cornhole Tournament at 6 p.m. The event is a lot of fun and includes everyone ages 13-99. The winning team gets a gift card to the Southport General Store!
I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream! Saturday, July 19, at 1 p.m. is the SYC Five
Islands Ice Cream Turnabout Race. We love the sailing and ice cream combination! This is not a hardcore race. If you don’t like racing, just think of this as a supervised sail to and from Five Islands. Don’t worry about the wind disappearing and leaving you stranded on the other side of the Sheepscot because we will have SYC patrol boats on hand to tow you back to Cozy Harbor if the wind should disappear (or become too strong). One special rule for this event: Each boat must have two people on board. The reason for this is that the Five Islands dock can get too crowded for a lot of boats to tie up. When turnabouts get to Five Islands they will drop off one person to buy the ice cream while the other person sails around in the harbor waiting for the ice cream buyer to return to the dock. Participants are responsible for paying for their own ice cream. The official starting time and location is 1:00 at the Cedarbush red nun outside Cozy Harbor. No need to sign up in advance. A couple of extra patrol boats would be helpful, as well as one or two extra people in the race committee boat to help supervise racers in Five Islands. If you are able to help please let Chris Jacobs know.
Save the Date for the Rock the Boat 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Aug. 2. This is the 12th year of the event which brings together racers and volunteer course marshalls for a fun-filled morning run/walk with great views of Cozy Harbor and the Sheepscot! If you haven’t been walking or running, there is plenty of time to get into shape and join the fun. Register online via Runsignup.
