Ryan Neal scores first career victory at Wiscasset Speedway
While other racetracks across New England postponed or cancelled their events this past weekend due to inclement weather, Wiscasset Speedway decided to take the gamble on Saturday and won, hosting an abbreviated feature-only racing program that was proudly sponsored by AIM Recycling Maine.
Team Wiscasset was successfully able to get all divisions in, which included the Maine Army National Guard Thunder 4 Minis, Darling’s Brunswick Ford Super Streets, Davis Erector Group 207 Crate Modifieds, County Truss 4-Cylinder Pros, T&L Automotive Pro Stocks and the debut of the Carver’s Driving Academy Crown Vics, who are running a 5-race series in 2025 with the opportunity to become a permanent division in the future depending on driver interest and car counts.
Kevin Greenhalgh pulled ahead with the early advantage in the 25-lap feature for the Thunder 4 Minis, but Gregg Norton was quick to steal it away. Week 1 winner Derek Cook was all over the leader in the laps that followed, with the two drivers breaking away at the front of the pack. TJ Moore took a spin in front of the leaders with just 4 laps to go, resulting in a caution. Derek Cook powered ahead following a chaotic restart, going 2-for-2 on the start of the season. Gregg Norton and Gunnar Josselyn followed, completing the podium.
Tyler Moore took off with the early lead in the 20-lap feature for the Crown Vics (which had an impressive 15-car field) but trouble was brewing as Derek Guptill and Spencer Moore both came to a stop on the track, resulting in an early-race caution. Moore maintained command on the restart while Karson Hewins remained glued to his back bumper. Veteran driver Kevin Sherman was also on the move, diving under Kolby Wescott and Karson Hewins both to take over the runner-up spot on lap 8. Sherman continued his pursuit in the laps that followed, tailing Tyler Moore. The two drivers made slight contact on lap 16, leaving Moore’s bumper hanging on by a thread.
Logan Spencer had a tire go down with 3 laps to go, sending him hard into the turn 2 wall. Tyler Moore continued to lead the charge on the restart while Karson Hewins cut down a tire just after the leaders picked up the white flag, resulting in a yellow-checkered to end the race. Tyler Moore picked up the victory while Kevin Sherman and Kolby Wescott rounded out the top 3.
Defending champion Noah Haggett pulled out to a sizable early lead in the 30-lap feature for the Super Streets. Just as the field was beginning to spread out, Josh Hall took a spin on lap 8, bringing out the caution. Noah Haggett continued to pace the field on the restart while week 1 winner David Greenleaf took a spin in turn 2. Greenleaf was able to fire his machine back up as the field remained green. Haggett held off the competition for the remainder of the race, scoring the victory over Dan Nessmith and Andy Kaherl.
Ryan Neal took off with a slight advantage over veteran driver Nick Hinkley in the 30-lap 207 Crate Modified spotlight feature, sponsored by Pepsi. Defending champion Ryan Phillips was also back in action after blowing up on Opening Day, quickly overtaking second. After a back & forth battle for a handful of laps, Phillips sacrificed the runner-up spot to Nick Hinkley once again. Ryan Neal, who is also the speed shop manager at Wiscasset Speedway, was able to hold off a hard-charging Nick Hinkley in the closing laps of the feature, securing his first career victory at Wiscasset Speedway. Ryan Phillips followed, completing the podium.
Rowdy Romano led the field to green in the 25-lap feature for the 4-Cylinder Pros, but division rookie Dawson Gagnon was quick to steal it away. Emmett Walker took a spin on lap 8, resulting in an early-race caution. After a botched restart by the leaders, the front 2 rows were swapped due to Wiscasset rules, putting Sam Fogg and Brody Picard on the chip for the restart.
Chassidy Shorty snuck right in once the field took the green, overtaking the top spot. There was a complete shake-up at the top of the leaderboard as Jay Plummer and Adam Taylor filed in behind her. Multiple drivers went around between laps 15 and 16, including Dylan Anderson, Emmett Walker and Max Parlin, resulting in a 4-lap fight to the finish. Chassidy Shorty led the charge on the restart, securing the victory while Adam Taylor and Jay Plummer completed the top 3.
Nick Calvert pulled out to a lengthy lead in the opening laps of the 40-lap Pro Stock feature while Steve Chicoine and Andy Gilbert filed in behind him. While the leaders broke out at the front of the field, a gaggle of cars bunched up in a tightly-knit pack behind them. Nick Hinkley broke through the pack on lap 15, climbing to fourth as Logan Melcher trailed closely behind.
Steve Chicoine successfully tracked down Nick Calvert at the front of the field, peeking to his outside on lap 22. Meanwhile, Nick Hinkley was still on the move, overtaking third from Andy Gilbert. Hinkley began trailing the leaders with just 10 laps to go, maneuvering to the outside lane the following lap. Hinkley took the leaders 3-wide with 8 laps to, overtaking the top spot. Logan Melcher joined the battle in the closing laps of the race, clearing Nick Calvert for third with just 6 laps to go. Nick Hinkley held off the competition in the closing laps of the race, picking up the victory over Steve Chicoine and Logan Melcher.
Team Wiscasset, along with 60+ competitors, worked closely together on Saturday to successfully get a full race program in amongst all odds - a truly impressive feat!
The track hopes to carry the positive momentum into another Group 2 program on Saturday, May 9, which will feature the first 100-lap Enduro race of the season.
The green flag flies at 2 p.m. and as always, adult admission is just $5 while kids 6 and under get in for free.
