Rambling on …
The other day, the online news feed mentioned a story from the U.K. suggesting a pair of royals got in a scuffle over something.
In case you’re wondering, I couldn't care less if Prince Harry took a swing at his brother, Prince William. Did you ever take a swing at your brother? After all, isn’t that what brothers do? Did one of the princes get a drop of royal blood on his royal upper lip? Who cares.
I don’t care about J Lo’s latest squeeze, either. Nor do I care about antics of the rest of the Hollywood acting club. And, I couldn't care less about snarky internet wise cracks and fake AI posts, no matter who created it or who they lampoon and attack.
I think it is about time that all politicians over 80 consider retirement. And, I can’t get too worked up about paying college athletes for their image and celebrity. Do you think they were not paid under the table already? Once upon a time, I suggested that sportswriters run the license plates of the shiny new cars that big-time college athletes drive. Somehow, that story never made it into the paper.
I care about starving babies, no matter their parentage or faith or location. Shame on those who wage war on children.
I care about the Red Sox and am intrigued with the WNBA. Many of you may be following the WNBA. I have seen several tourists wearing Caitlin Clark T-shirts walking around the Harbor.
I care about the work done by the nurses (especially Rachel and Sara) at the wound care clinic at the former St. Andrews Hospital, now a satellite arm of MaineHealth. We should always praise first responders and EMTs, but the folks who care for us when we walk out the hospital doors are important, too.
And, we all should mourn the passing of good men and women. Guys like George McEvoy and Dave Parkhurst, a couple of guys who made Boothbay a better place to live. RIP.
There, I got all that stuff off my chest. Sorry.
The other day, a handsome woman stopped me at Hannaford’s market and suggested that I refrain from writing about politics, and she is right. I suppose I should write about the price of lobsters. Or the effect of climate change (yes, it is real) on our communities, or maybe the pending fiscal crisis in our local education community, and maybe I will.
But, and you knew that ‘b’ word was coming, it is just so tempting to mention the off-the-wall stuff that seems to flow out of the White House. What do I mean? Here is a trio of snippets to ponder.
First, last week, the federal government‘s Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly jobs report indicated a substantial slowdown in hiring, causing some economists to suggest our current fiscal policies were having a bad effect on our economy. The president reacted by saying the official government figures were rigged, and he fired the woman who ran that department. Wait a minute, the government collects national data. Runs it through an economic blender and issues a report every month. Isn’t firing the statistics executive kind of like firing the scorer after your team lost?
Second, the Smithsonian Institution’s exhibit on the American presidency removed the part noting the current president had been impeached twice. It did mention the impeachments of Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, and noted that Richard Nixon faced impeachment during the Watergate investigation, but no mention of Mr. 45/47. FYI, he was impeached in the House twice and found not guilty in the Senate. The exhibit was supposed to highlight the limits on presidential power.
Third, Jeffrey Epstein’s former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker and abuser of underage girls, met with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche (who was also Trump’s defense attorney) for two days last week. A few days later, the woman serving a 20-year sentence for her crimes was transferred from a federal pen to a low-security Texas prison camp with no fence. It is no secret that the White House is trying to bury the Epstein scandal story. But it is propelled by some of the president’s strongest MAGA supporters seeking answers about who may or may not be involved with the late sex trafficker ( who may or may not have committed suicide in prison) and former longtime DJT pal. Maxwell has appealed her conviction to the U.S. Supreme Court and has mentioned she might like a pardon. Trump acknowledged he has the power to pardon her. Meanwhile, the family of Virginia Giuffre, one of the underage girls involved in the scandal, criticized the move. In a statement to Fox News, the family said it was a horror and outrage that the convicted sex offender received preferential treatment.
Sorry readers, I cannot make up this kind of stuff. No one, not even Carl Hiaasen, would write this kind of stuff and expect their readers to believe it. Right?
