The Southport Memorial Library and the Hendricks Hill Museum bring the 1968 ABC TV documentary, "A Sense of Wonder," filmed on Southport and discovered rusted, deteriorating, and fused in a cupboard in the library, back to life on Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Southport Town Hall, 361 Hendricks Hill Road.
The preservation journey of the film has wended its way through Georgia, Michigan, New York, Bucksport, and finally back to Southport Island. With narration by Helen Hayes, who visited the peninsula at the time, it highlights the natural beauty of the world through Rachel Carson’s own written words. It also features an interview with Southport resident Dorothy Freeman, Rachel Carson's best friend.
ABC won an institutional Peabody award that year for the film, with many voices lending to the call for its award-winning status. Described as an “awesome and moving hymn to the beauties and wonders of nature,” we invite people to join us for an evening of viewing and quiet reflection on the meaningfulness of nature all around us.
