Old boats need love, too
With temperatures near 50 F and a bluebird sky, it was hard to believe Glenn Geary was pulled Wednesday, Jan. 15 because of ice.
But, the 73-foot fishing boat had been boxed around and came up Wednesday at the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard.
“(Glenn Geary) was ice-bound a couple of days ago,” Shipyard Manager Eric Graves said. “She’s one of those old fishing boats that needs some love.”
The boat, which was built by Thomaston’s Newbert and Wallace in the late 1940s, is owned currently by the shipyard. It had been used as a sardine carrier by Stimson Cannery.
Now, the boat is technically for sale and Graves said the shipyard had a few ideas “kicking around” for the wooden-hulled ship.
“Every few years we pull her up to do work,” he said. “Her hull is in really good shape, but she needs some systems work.”
