Aug. 13, writer and producer Mary Lou Teel, whose career with CBS included working on programs such as "Sunday Morning" and "Postcards from Maine," came to the Community Center to host a talk about her 45-year career in journalism and television. About 35 people turned out and Teel entertained them with talk and video clips from the shows she produced.

Over her career, which began with CBS in 1985, Teel has created stories highlighting the people and places of Maine. From stories about toothpicks to major world events, her career has taken her across Maine and beyond, introducing her to new people and places every few weeks.

She has met people such as former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson and worked alongside television personality Mo Rocca.

“I love going to new places. I got to experience all these different things,” Teel said.

Boothbay has also played a role in some of the stories Teel helped tell. During the talk, familiar local names and faces were remembered, including Lawrence Durfee, Robert Mitchell, Tim Sample and the late June Elderkin and Gus Pratt.

For Teel, the most important part of her work has always been the people behind the stories.

“It’s about the heart of the story,” Teel said.

Teel described her work as a way of preserving a moment in time — capturing the people, places and experiences that might otherwise be forgotten.
