Seahawks send 6 to Class B championships
With a top-10!placement, Wiscasset’s Ben Gapski led the Seahawks in the Class B State Indoor Track Championships Feb. 16 in Lewiston. Overall, six Boothbay region athletes competed in the final team meet of the season.
“The goal is to get kids to states, and indoor track is really competitive,” Coach Nick Scott said. “Qualifying folks for states, that's always the main goal. And we've got quite a few there.”
For the boys, Gapski placed eighth in the 55m hurdles in 8.75; and Aron Geddes, Lysander Lefevre, Isaac Fanslau, and Gapski placed 17th in the 4x800m relay in 10:47.39.
For the girls, Rose Campbell placed 19th in the 55m dash in 28.32; and Zuriel Smith placed 13th in the shot put with 27-4.5.
Scott said Gapski ran a personal record, exceeding his seed, and Campbell also beat a personal season record.
Even though the team season is over, one more athlete has a chance to shine. Ross Gaffney will be competing in the race walk at the New Balance Nationals indoor track & field championships in Boston, March 12-15.
Overall, the coach said he was proud of his team. He said a few athletes barely missed qualifying for the championships, one by milliseconds, which was frustrating but spoke to their ability. Looking ahead, he said he expects to their performances to grow alongside their experience.
“It's amazing how fast 14 weeks kind of goes by,” he said. “This is week 14 of the winter season, and we had a roster filled with kids who are willing to work hard and show up to practice each day.”
