Give us a break frequent letter writers
Dear Editor:
I am a life-long reader of the Boothbay Register and Wiscasset Newspaper. The coverage of the peninsula is excellent. I see photos and news of the region, the comings and goings of friends and family, as well as my favorite sections. It’s a great newspaper.
I subscribe to several print newspapers, some online resources and a few magazines. My wife and I travel a bit, so I buy local newspapers wherever I go. The Letters to the Editor section of the Boothbay Register and Wiscasset Newspaper is unique, containing elements unlike any other Letters sections I’ve read anywhere else.
The thing that confounds me is the continued inclusion of the back-and-forth political opinions featured with such regularity that some contributors essentially have their own weekly columns. For example, Mr. Gregg from Southport has a letter in almost every issue printed this year (and quite a few included in 2025). I do not know him. I have nothing against him. He seems to be passionate about his opinions, but other than supporting Trump and thinking that all liberals are imbecilic; it’s difficult to decipher his stream of consciousness musings into more accessible content.
Mr. Nehring from Boothbay is another example of a citizen contributor (although not as frequent as Mr. Gregg). His prose is a little more accessible. He is passionate about his opinions and seems to think Trump supporters are misinformed.
To be clear, I am not advocating for discontinuing the Letters section. I love the announcements, acknowledgments and gratitude shared in that section. It’s positive, community centric and adds useful content. Instead, maybe Mr. Gregg, Mr. Nehring, and the remaining amateur political commentators, could start a coffee group, have face-to-face discussions/debates, and leave the Letters section for more meaningful information while giving the rest of us a break.
