Dive into a whale of a learning experience!
On Saturday, Feb. 21, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and the Boothbay Region Land Trust are teaming up with Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences to present an unforgettable, free, family-friendly educational event at Bigelow Laboratory (60 Bigelow Drive, East Boothbay).
Experience science in a spectacular way by stepping inside “Chunk,” a life-size, inflatable humpback whale, and embark on an immersive journey through the wonders of whale anatomy and ocean ecology. This unique experience is part of the nationally recognized Within the Whale program, designed and guided by award-winning wildlife educator Jessica Woodend, creator of this one-of-a-kind marine science adventure.
Inside the whale, participants of all ages will explore 3D anatomical features and learn engaging facts about humpbacks and marine ecosystems — a perfect blend of fun and science that connects people directly with the ocean world.
In addition to this immersive experience:
• Make your own postcard using handmade plankton stamps with educators from Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences — a creative way to celebrate the tiny but mighty organisms that form the base of the ocean food web.
• Visit the Boothbay Region Land Trust table, where kids can paint a wooden whale ornament to take home — a hands-on activity inspiring artistic expression and ocean appreciation.
• Enjoy a special ocean-themed Story Time presented by Jen from the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, blending tales and learning for our youngest attendees.
This free event invites families, students, and ocean lovers of all ages to explore marine science in a fun, interactive setting. No registration is required — just bring your curiosity and sense of adventure!
This program is proudly presented by Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, and the Boothbay Region Land Trust.
