It's the Great Pumpkin, BRVM!
Boothbay Railway Village Museum (BRVM) served up a day full of fall fun Sept. 27 at its annual Family Harvest Day event.
The Village Green was full of activity as children bumped along in a barrel train ride pulled by a vintage 1930s tractor, played lawn games, painted miniature pumpkins, or got their own faces painted.
Animal lovers were also in for a treat as Willow, the Eastern Screech Owl from the Pollination Station, appeared, as did 3-year-old Chevy the dog, who accompanied representatives from Midcoast Humane. Chevy is available for adoption at the organization’s Brunswick campus.
Boothbay Sea and Science Center (BSSC) had a table laden with pearl beads, sequins, ribbons and other accessories for children to decorate oyster shells or make a paper jellyfish.
However, the main attraction was the scenic hayride across the grounds to a secret pumpkin patch, where children got to pick out their own pumpkin, or, in most cases, struggled to pick up their chosen pumpkin until their parents swooped in to assist.
BRVM Board President Caleb Hodgdon estimated there were about 300 visitors by the event's halfway mark.
“This is what the village is about. It's what George (McEvoy) started it for, is to be part of the community. It's awesome to see so many kids here having fun and just being involved,” said Hodgdon.
BRVM hosts its annual Fall Foliage Festival on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum’s SPOOKtacular celebration returns Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
