Exploring the history of Damariscove Island
Damariscove, one of Maine’s earliest settlement sites, dates back four centuries and has a an incredible history. The island is owned and managed by the Boothbay Region Land Trust. The Abenakis and, later, European fishermen settled and fished there from 1622 to the late 20th century.
Damariscove once was a bustling fishing center, one of the population centers in the Maine frontier, with at least 30 vessels and home to many residents. Later, it was a family-owned farming and fishing community. By the early 1900s the island was inhabited year-round by seasonal fishermen, farmers, coast guardsmen, summer cottagers with a school having 18 students.
Join Chip Griffin, co-author of “Coming of Age on Damariscove Island,” on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 6-8 p.m. to learn more about the pirates, ghosts and remarkable history of this fascinating island. The fee is $10, and copies of his book as well as other handouts will be available free of charge.
