Cemetery district seeks new treasurer
Boothbay Region Cemetery District is seeking a new treasurer following the resignation of Patty Minerich of Boothbay Harbor. Her last day will be May 2.
Jan. 28, the board of trustees discussed appointing someone to complete Minerich’s term.
President Skip McPhee said the charter requires trustees to maintain a certain number of representatives from each town, so they are looking for a candidate from Boothbay Harbor.
Trustees also discussed Minerich’s offer to work as an independent contractor for a small fee (a dollar per year) to do bookkeeping. This would not replace the treasurer slot on the board, but act as a support. Secretary Sue Hochchin said the St. Andrews Auxiliary board has a similar setup. This issue was tabled until the next meeting.
In other business, trustees approved the district’s 2026 budget, totaling a projected $84,500. They also approved a $43,000 landscaping contract from Bahama Breeze Landscaping for the upkeep of their 11 cemeteries. This is a $1,000 increase from last year’s contract.
The contract will be edited to take out a section giving the district the right to terminate the deal if Boothbay or Boothbay Harbor fails to appropriate the requested funds. The trustees felt it didn't make sense to keep it, as the landscaping will need to be done regardless.
If the towns did not grant the requested monies, McPhee said the district would have enough funds to honor its year-long contract. After that, the towns would either need to take on the responsibility of upkeep or contract it out themselves.
Sprague Metal Fabrication Inc. was contracted for about $2,000 to repair the sign at Boothbay’s Oceanview cemetery, which had been damaged by a vehicle. There are plans to make the sign’s height adjustable.
