Burnt Island opening delayed as new dock construction nears completion
The Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) and the Keepers of Burnt Island Light are excited to welcome visitors back to Burnt Island Light for another memorable summer season. However, due to a slight delay in the completion of the island's new public dock, Burnt Island will remain closed to visitors through July 6, with public access beginning Tuesday, July 7.
As a result, the island will not be open to visitors over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
While we know many community members and visitors look forward to making Burnt Island part of their summer traditions, we're asking for your patience as the final work on this important improvement is completed.
The new dock represents a significant investment in the future of Burnt Island. It will provide safer, more reliable, and improved access for the thousands of visitors, volunteers, school groups, children’s camps, and researchers who travel to the island each year. This enhancement will help ensure that Burnt Island remains an accessible and welcoming destination for years to come.
We understand that delays can be disappointing, but we truly believe this project will be worth the wait.
Beginning July 7, visitors will once again be able to experience guided tours of the historic Keeper's House and Lighthouse, explore the island's scenic trails, enjoy its breathtaking coastal views, and discover the rich maritime history and educational programs that make Burnt Island such a special place.
Both DMR and the Keepers of Burnt Island Light are grateful for the community's understanding and continued support as we complete this exciting project. We can't wait to share the new dock - and another wonderful season on Burnt Island with all of you.
Thank you for your patience. We'll see you on the island beginning July 7.
