Seahawk runners recognized for strong season
The Boothbay Region High School cross country team held its annual awards night Nov. 6 in front of a small crowd of friends and family at the school library. The 15 athletes were recognized for their 2025 season performance.
The girls team won the Mountain Valley Conference (MVC) championships for the fourth year in a row and placed seventh in the Class C division at the state championships Nov 1. The boys placed fourth at the MVC championships and qualified at the state level for the 17th year in a row. Coach Nick Scott also reported many personal records and athletic improvements over the season.
Scott congratulated the team on its performance and discussed how the lessons learned throughout the season will serve the members well byond the finish line. He talked about the difficulty of running 5,000 meters, and the voice going through a runner’s head telling them to ease up and slow down when things get uncomfortable.
“But how you respond to that voice in that moment really defines our character. So, we try to sharpen that race edge and push through that adversity as best as possible. Always this concept of you have more if you're willing to dig down deep and find it. And how we break through what we thought wasn't possible is by finding that spot where that wall is, and then busting through it anyways,” he said. “Life will throw a whole bunch of adversity at you, and these types of character traits will serve you well in the future.”
The athletes were praised for their contributions, performance and sportsmanship. The following students were recognized: freshmen Carson MacKusick, Maggie McCarthy, John Cooper and Audrey Robinson; sophomores Ben Gapski (Wiscasset), Jackson Zehm and Louie Caidoc; juniors Lexi Hughes and AJ Crocker; and seniors Hannah Kreft, Rose Campbell, Abby Orchard, Nathan Percival, Ross Gaffney and Maddie Andreasen. Scott and Jake McCarthy coached the team.
In addition, several athletes were given plaque awards. Hughes and Zehm were named most improved, Orchard and Gaffney won the coach's award, and Andreasen and Crocker were named the most valuable players.
