This week at the Harbor Theater
"Merrily We Roll Along" - (PG-13; 2 hours, 25 minutes) The live recording of the acclaimed 2024 Tony Award–winning Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s groundbreaking musical, filmed at the Hudson Theatre in New York City. Told in reverse chronological order, the story follows composer Franklin Shepard at the height of his Hollywood success and traces his life backward over three decades, revealing how his choices — including leaving behind his theater career and closest friends — shaped the man he becomes. At its heart, the musical explores the complex, evolving relationships between Frank and his two lifelong collaborators, writer Mary and playwright-lyricist Charley. Originally debuting on Broadway in 1981 and later gaining cult status, Merrily We Roll Along features some of Sondheim’s most celebrated and personal songs. The 2023–2024 revival, directed by Maria Friedman, reimagined the work with extraordinary clarity and emotional depth, earning widespread critical acclaim and multiple Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. Wednesday, April 1, 2 p.m. (OCAP) and Thursday, April 2, 7 p.m.
“There are lessons to be learned from the modest goals of this Merrily We Roll Along: to bring a movie audience to the life of the stage and, in so doing, to those thorny stages of life.” – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times
"Project Hail Mary" - (PG13; 2 hours 37 minutes) - Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction... but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone. Plays Friday, April 3, 7 p.m., Saturday, April 4, 7 p.m., Sunday, April 5, 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2 p.m. (OCAP) and Thursday, April 9, 7 p.m.
“Project Hail Mary is at its core a kids’ movie. That lessens its gravity, a bit. But it also makes it the kind of film that will send happy viewers soaring into orbit, again and again.” – Kyle Smith, Wall Street Journal
