| On a South Pacific island during WWII, love blooms. A young naval officer falls for a Polynesian girl, and Nurse Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor) of the U.S. Navy falls for middle-aged French plantation owner Emile De Becque (Rossano Brazzi), but recoils upon discovering that he's fathered two mixed-race children. When Nellie leaves him, the heartbroken Emile agrees to take on a dangerous espionage mission. The story of the airman rescued from the sea at great cost was (allegedly) true. He had ditched under the noses of Japanese soldiers occupying an island. They were held off by successive flights of American planes until rescue could be attempted. At the time of its debut, South Pacific was considered groundbreaking—and controversial—for its honest portrayal of racism and prejudice. Through its story and songs, including “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught,” the film challenged audiences to confront deeply ingrained biases and encouraged a message of tolerance during a segregated era.
Lunch served at 12:30 p.m., followed by the film at 1:00 p.m. Members: $15; Non-Members: $19 Film only at 1:00 pm: Regular ticket prices
