This week at the Harbor Theater
"Avatar: Fire And Ash" - (PG13; 3 hours, 18 minutes) - Director James Cameron takes audiences back to the habitable moon Pandora. In an immersive new adventure as human-turned-Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), and Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), face the combined threat of the human RDA forces and the Mangkwan, a tribe of ruthless, warmongering, collaborationist Na’vi. The frenetic energy of its arrow-shooting and boat-exploding amps up anxiety, while gorgeous visuals of dusky skies and sparkling water lapping up on the shore remind you of what the Na’vi fight to protect. Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet reprise their roles from the previous films, with Oona Chaplin joining the cast. Avatar: Fire and Ash is a triumph of visuals, action, and emotional sincerity. Cameron once again proves that blockbuster cinema doesn’t have to be hollow to be thrilling. Final screenings: Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2 p.m. (OCAP) and Thursday, Feb. 26, 7 p.m.
"The Testament of Ann Lee" - (R; 2 hours, 17 minutes) - From acclaimed writer-director Mona Fastvold comes a bold reimagining of the true story of Ann Lee, the visionary founder of the Shakers. Amanda Seyfried delivers a commanding performance as the movement’s charismatic leader, whose radical beliefs in gender and social equality inspired fierce devotion—and deep controversy. Blending history with lyrical invention, The Testament of Ann Lee traces the ecstasy and sacrifice of Lee’s pursuit of a spiritual utopia. The film is infused with more than a dozen traditional Shaker hymns, transformed into striking musical sequences with choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall, alongside an evocative original score and songs by Daniel Blumberg. At once intimate and rapturous, the film is a singular portrait of faith, devotion, and the cost of visionary change. Plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27; Saturday, Feb. 28 and Thursday, March 4; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 4 (OCAP).
“[Ann Lee] would be the leader of one of the most influential religious sects in the New World. But it would all happen in a very strange way, and that is the story told in The Testament of Ann Lee, Mona Fastvold’s singular, astonishing, otherworldly biographical musical about the founder and spiritual leader of the Shakers. That’s a lot of adjectives, I know, but I can’t pick one to remove — and even those don’t quite capture how unusual and terrific this movie is.” –Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times
"Wuthering Heights" - (R; 2 hours, 16 minutes) - Emily Brontë’s stormy Gothic romance returns to the big screen in a bold new adaptation directed by Emerald Fennell. The film stars Jacob Elordi as the brooding, obsessive Heathcliff and Margot Robbie as the fiercely passionate Catherine Earnshaw. Set against the wild, windswept Yorkshire moors, the story traces the all-consuming bond between Heathcliff—an orphan taken in by the Earnshaw family—and Catherine, whose love for him defies class and convention. When Catherine chooses social advancement over her soulmate, Heathcliff’s heartbreak turns to vengeance, unleashing a generational cycle of longing, cruelty, and emotional reckoning. Dark, romantic, and psychologically charged, this new "Wuthering Heights" explores love at its most transcendent—and most destructive—through a visually lush and emotionally volatile lens. Opening Friday, March 6, 7 p.m., Saturday, March 7, 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 11, 2 p.m. (OCAP), Thursday, March 12, 7 p.m.
“Style over substance? Not at all -- it’s more that Fennell understands that style can be substance when you do it right.” – Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph (UK)
