Upcoming King Tides in the Boothbay region
Another period of astronomically high tides is expected in the Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor area from Jan. 1 to Jan. 4. These tides, like those observed in early November and early December, are notably higher than typical high tide levels. Known as perigean spring tides or "king tides," these events occur when a new or full moon aligns almost perfectly with the Earth and the sun. This alignment leads to exceptionally high tides.
It is important to note that while these tides are not directly caused by winter storms, their impact on coastal areas can be significantly worsened if they occur in conjunction with such storms. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about local tide conditions, which can be monitored at https://www.usharbors.com/harbor/maine.
Awareness of how weather and sea level changes contribute to coastal flooding, erosion, and damage to shorelines and infrastructure is crucial for our local communities. By participating in the collection of flood impact data, community members can play a vital role in supporting emergency preparedness, identifying areas of concern, and informing decisions related to climate resilience.
To assist with these efforts, you can download a coastal flooding data collection sheet and instructions for reporting your findings at https://investigate.gmri.org/project/coastal_flooding. Your contributions will help local authorities and stakeholders make better-informed decisions to protect our coastal environment.
The Boothbay RegionClimate Action Team (BRCAT) invites you to join its efforts to enhance the resilience of our communities against climate-related challenges. To join, for questions or additional information, please email us at BRclimate@gmail.com.
