Storytelling trio to play The Waldo
A rare and intimate evening of acoustic music featuring Tim O’Brien, Sam Grisman, and Victor Furtado. This special trio performance, at the Waldo Theatre Jan. 17, brings together three musicians whose shared love of song, storytelling, and instrumental mastery continues the timeless lineage of American acoustic music.
“The legendary Tim O’Brien is one of the most beloved and influential singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists in American acoustic music and the impact that his songs and musicianship have had on our tribe of acousticians is immeasurable," said Grisman.
“When I was a junior in high school, if you would have asked me what my dream job would be, without a doubt I would have answered to be in the Tim O’Brien Band. It is a great honor to get to play some of my favorite Tim tunes with the man himself, and to get to do it in a trio setting with the great Victor Furtado, one of my favorite pickin’ pals who also grew up on Tim’s music, is going to make for a special experience for everyone on stage and in the audience! We can’t wait to see y’all out there.”
For more than 50 years, Grammy winner Tim O’Brien has woven his sound through the bluegrass, folk, and Americana genres. A multi-instrumentalist whose songs have been covered by everyone from the Seldom Scene and Newgrass Revival to Dierks Bentley and Garth Brooks, he’s known for his clear tenor voice and a driving rhythm on guitar, mandolin, and fiddle.
Living in Nashville since 1996, O’Brien’s skills on guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo make him an in- demand session player. The International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awarded him song of the year in 2006 and named him best male vocalist in 1993 and 2006. He was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2013 and with Hot Rize, into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2022, and the IBMA Hall of Fame in 2025.
Contemporary clawhammer banjoist Victor Furtado is the 2019 recipient of the 10th annual Steve Martin Banjo Prize. At 19, Furtado is the youngest recipient of this honor which highlights exceptional banjo performers in modern music. He has won many competitions including the Grand Prize at the 2015 Clifftop Banjo Contest, the Galax Old Time Fiddlers Convention, and the international FreshGrass competition in 2016.
Young bass master Samson Grisman grew up hearing his father, Dave “Dawg” Grisman jamming with people like Doc Watson, Tony Rice and Jerry Garcia. His own Sam Grisman Project breaks new ground along those same sonic pathways.
