Standing room only Open Mic night
It was standing room only for the Opera House’s first winter open mic drawing an audience of about 80 and 20-22 talented performers. Friday, Jan. 17 was a fun night of great music, anecdotes and storytelling. Groups, duos and solo performers drew enthusiastic applause throughout the evening.
Local performers taking the “stage” in the historic upstairs bar included The Newagen Crew, Nate and Chip, John Webster, Mickey the Midcoast Cowboy, Bob Moore, and Cross River.
There were three outstanding youth performers, Lincoln Academy students, who displayed undeniable talent: Guitarist Hava sang two songs including Fleetwood Mac’s “Silver Spring.” Jazz/ragtime pianist and singer Phil, whose third album is being released in late spring, played a few pieces of new music. Saxophonist Jayden played “Suicide Is Painless” and “The Godfather Waltz.” And, before leaving the stage, he gave this message: “A warning for all you guitar players – I’m coming for you.” The audience erupted into laughter and applause.
Local storyteller and candymaker Webster shared stories about the time the family home accidentally caught fire, another about two adorable little girls; and the importance of helping others, something instilled in him by his parents.
Performers also sang songs by Noel Paul Stookey, Tom Clancy, Stan Rogers, Harry Chapin, Jethro Tull, George Gershwin, Jonathan Edwards, Lyle Lovett and Neil Young, among others.
There are two more open mics: Friday, Feb. 6 and Friday, March 6. For details about getting on the performance list, visit https://boothbayoperahouse.com
