Sprucewold Column: Cabins filling up
Cabins are slowly coming to life as families return for the summer season. Thank you so much to Jim Rayball of Bayberry Road for last week’s 2026 inaugural column. Jim is Holly Fischer’s husband, the late Janet Fischer’s son-in-law, and has a long history here which he described so beautifully. Thank you, Jim. Looking forward to other columnists this summer. Please let me know if you would like to write for the Boothbay Register weekly column for our summer colony.
Mark your calendars for these social events from the Sprucewold Association: the Opening Party at the Linekin Green on Sunday, July 5 from 5 to 7 p.m., please bring an appetizer to share with beverages provided by the Sprucewold Association. The next occasion is the Annual Potluck Dinner on Linekin Green, Saturday, Aug. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m., please bring a salad, entree, or dessert to share with beverages provided by the Sprucewold Association.
The annual meetings for the Linekin Heights Association and the Sprucewold Association will be on the first Saturday in August, at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Linekin Green. The Sprucewold Beach Club will meet on Saturday, Aug. 8, time and place TBA. The dates for the annual meetings and social events will be posted on the message boards at the mailboxes as reminders. And remember to check the Sprucewold Interest Group on Facebook for updates.
Firewise Chairpersons Randall Lehman and Curt Audin announce the annual Sprucewold Hazardous Fuels Reduction Program for clearing branches and tree limbs around cabins and homes to reduce fire hazards. Chipping Day will be Aug. 8. Branches, tree limbs, and small tree trunks must be less than 4 inches in diameter and piled on your property edge next to the roadway for chipping. Please check your email for a request form, complete the form and return directly or by email to the chairpersons. The State of Maine no longer funds this part of the essential fire safety program so the Sprucewold Association has stepped up to keep this program going in Sprucewold. Volunteers are needed to assist with the collection on Chipping Day so please contact Randy or Curt; only 20 home owners can be accommodated so get your forms in ASAP!
Sprucewold Association Second Vice President and Keeper of the Directory Danielle Bazinet has been busy updating the directory. She did an amazing job in her first year last year and the 2026 edition will be published soon, there is also a digital version. Please remember when sending in your annual dues each year that you check the information on your form for your most current emails and addresses. Also, check your email for a note from Sprucewold Association Treasure Artie Sullivan to see if you are up to date on your dues to the association.
We want to offer an enormous and much overdue thank you to Tina Miller and Pat Moore for their extraordinary dedication in keeping the Sprucewold signage and family names custom-painted and up to date for the past twenty years. Their care and attention have been such a meaningful part of the character of our community. Thank you both so much!
Barbara Tobias of Birch Road has volunteered to take over this job and we are so pleased, thank you Barbara.
Nicole Drucker of Spruce Point Hill Road will be the new gardener for Nahanada Park. Nicole completed the Master Gardener course this winter and we are excited to have her on board. Nicole is the granddaughter of the late Laddie Drucker. Thank you to Ernie Labelle for these many years of service at the park!
Sprucewold president Annaliese Rittershaus Neff reports: As you may have heard, we had thefts of copper pipe over the winter. Lt. Braley from the Boothbay Harbor Police investigated, the confirmed total number of copper pipe thefts was four: two cabins on Crest and two cabins on Birch. As this is an ongoing investigation, more details cannot be shared yet. However, if the case is brought to a close and charges are filed, we will be notified and will share what we can with the greater community.
Elisa Goldsmith, president of the Sprucewold Beach Club, is pleased to announce that Niam Rogers will serve as our Beach Attendant for the summer. He will work the now-familiar, part-time schedule: three hours per day, five days each week. He will focus on keeping the sign-in sheet available and the beach tidy. He will also rake the seaweed as the tide allows and he will report any issues to Howard Friant, Tom Thompson, or Elisa Goldsmith.
Sad to report that our long time Sprucewold friend and Bayberry Road neighbor Sara Angel died in November in South Carolina. Our sincere sympathy to her husband Jack, daughter Kristi and grandsons. We will miss her smiles, kind words and conversations, her beautiful cross stitch and braided rugs, book recommendations, and friendly waves from her shady front porch.
Several cabins changed hands last summer so please be sure to greet your new neighbors and invite them to our events.
Dog walkers and daily walkers are out and about so for safety please remember when driving that the speed limit is 25 miles per hour and we have many blind corners on our narrow streets.
