Southport Yacht Club
It’s happening. August is creeping in and we can’t avoid looking at the calendar. We will savor the remaining days of summer as our time together on Southport is never quite long enough.
The winds this week made sailing and boating challenging. We were glad to get in the Tuesday night 420 races in but on Friday night instead. Seven boats with kids ages 11 to 29 sailed through some wind shifts and sporty gusts with a couple of photo finishes. First place went to David Turley and Liam Donahue. In second place was Hadden Brinegar and Greydon Smith. And coming in third was Joe Duffy and Robert Strange.
The much-anticipated Five Islands Ice Cream Race had to be called off on Saturday due to the wind but we are hoping to reschedule soon.
Friday night’s Cornhole Tournament brought a mix of ages and abilities. Former champions, Sheila and Bob Flory, made it to the final round but lost to Jr. Sailing Director David Turley and Jim Duffy. Jim is Joe Duffy’s father, and because Joe is a former SYC Cornhole champion, he was elated to see his dad rise to the top and keep the Duffy name on the trophy board. David and Jim were excited to win a gift card to the Southport General Store to celebrate their big win!
The Seguin Island Open Race is Saturday, July 25 starting at 11 a.m. at the Red Nun. Please pre-register for the race here. The SIs and NORs are posted on the Seguin Island Open Race listing on the Calendar page. We hope to have lots of big boats on the line for an exhilarating sprint to Seguin and back. Don’t forget to reserve dinner for you and your crew at the Lobster Bake following the race.
On the horizon we have the annual Lobster Bake on Saturday night. Please purchase your tickets today. We have a Wednesdsay deadline with Cozy’s Dockside and want to give them an accurate final number for the Lobster Bake. You don’t need to be a lobster lover to attend! We have a chicken and hamburger option as well as a kids meal option! Check the website or the Weekly for the link to purchase tickets online.
The T-shirt deadline for Rock the Boat 5K Run/Walk is Wednesday, July 22 at midnight. If you register by Wednesday at midnight, you are guaranteed to get a T-shirt. Rock the Boat is a family-friendly 5K Run/Walk hosted at SYC on Aug. 1. The course is a beautiful 3.1 miles starting at SYC, going over to Pratt’s, up to the store, down Dogfish Head and up Beach Road and back to SYC. The event is a fundraiser for the Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation. Plan to join us as a walker/runner or as a volunteer! Either way, there will be watermelon waiting at the finish! Here is the link to register. We need lots of volunteers to make the event happen. Click here to help or donate a pie.
