Southport Yacht Club
The Maine State Opti Championships brought a lot of excitement to Cozy Harbor last week. Nearly 60 sailors came from as far north as Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club in Blue Hill and from as far south as the Agamanticus Yacht Club in York, Maine. Conditions were terrific for sailing and the Sheepscot even provided a humpback whale sighting for some of the fleet!
We are most proud of the awards our sailors receive for strong sportsmanship, being kind and generous and having a great attitude. Teddy Helming received the Sportsmanship Award, Sebastian Moen received the Just Keep Swimming Award, Cosmina Finn earned the Opti Optimism Award, Cate Browne earned the Hangin In There Award, and Caroline Stern earned the Comeback Contender Award. In the championship fleet, Hadden Brinegar placed 3rd in Red Fleet, Taylor Smith placed 4th in Blue Fleet, and James Allison finsihed 3rd in White Fleet. This is the last week of the sailing program with the Junior Banquet on Friday night.
The Beer Tasting Saturday Night was a delight to all. Geoff and the whole team of Chattertons put on another fantastic event. Close to 100 people came out to enjoy hearing about the history, ingredients, and brewing processes of the beers and ciders that Geoff and Joan selected for our enjoyment. Thanks to all who brought delicious appetizers to share and we noticed many empty plates heading home.
The 'Round Southport race was postponed due to weather. The race will be this Saturday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. We are hoping to reclaim the famous trash can trophy that is proudly housed at the winning club! FMI: https://shorturl.fm/ydJpb
This is the last column of the summer and always a hard one to write. This weekend we say goodbye as friends and loved ones start heading back home and we clink our glasses one last time at the Commodore’s Closing Reception. Join us Saturday night at 6:00 pm and bring an appetizer if you wish.
Our hearts are full as we relish our final days on the island and cross over the Piscataqua Bridge as we head back to our winter homes.
