Robert A. Robertson Jr.
Robert Abel “Bob” Robertson Jr. passed away on Nov. 4, 2025 after a brief stay at a hospice facility near his home in Pineville, North Carolina. He was 89 years old.
Bob was born at home in East Sullivan, Maine on Aug. 1, 1936, to Edna Hammond and Robert Robertson Sr. He grew up exploring the quarries of North Sullivan and spent two years in the Carolinas during World War II. Bob graduated from Sullivan Memorial High School in 1955 where he participated in everything from the Rifle Club to the Chef’s Club (though we don’t think he ever entered a kitchen again!).
Bob met his future wife, Linda, at the Mariaville Dance Hall and they married in 1962. They spent their early years together in Hancock and Franklin. Bob and Linda enjoyed many motorcycle trips with friends across the U.S. and Canada before starting their family. When Jane and Mary came along, they moved to East Sullivan and later settled in Boothbay in 1986.
Bob wore many hats over the years and loved competition. He did drag racing at Winterport, raced lobster boats up and down the Maine coast, and spent many Sundays at the shooting range. He also raced snowmobiles, securing a spot in the Nationals before breaking his leg in the final race of the season.
He loved being on the water and after a few years working in area auto body shops, spent many years as a commercial fisherman. He fished waters from the Canadian border to Cape Cod and spent later years lobstering out of Boothbay Harbor.
Never one to rest, Bob “retired” by selling campers on Route 1 and bartering with tourists at the Montsweag Flea Market. He and Linda were snowbirds for a few years, taking their camper to Florida with stops in the Carolinas to see the girls. Linda and the girls finally convinced him to move South in 2022. He spent his last years in North Carolina which gave him the chance to enjoy his two grandchildren, Eleanor and Everett.
Robert was predeceased by his parents and brother, Nicholas Hall Robertson.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Linda; two daughters, Jane Townsend and son-in-law, Bryan, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, and Mary Robertson of Pineville, North Carolina; his beloved grandchildren, Eleanor and Everett Townsend; special nieces, Holly Hitchcock and Robin (Wayne) Clark; and grandnephews, Tony Brenton and Adam Hitchcock. He will be sorely missed by his faithful cat, Rusty.
The family will return Bob to his beloved Frenchman’s Bay in the summer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Frenchman’s Bay Library, P.O. Box 215 Sullivan, ME 04664.
