Southport Yacht Club
We are always looking for ways to give back to the membership. Last fall, several folks offered up the idea that ice is always in demand and wondered if we could possibly offer it to the membership. The board voted unanimously to approve the purchase of an ice machine that members could have access to throughout the day. Working in consultation with local food and beverage professionals, we were able to purchase and install a machine that produces roughly 250 pounds of ice per day and is located in the grill area of the senior club. You are all welcome to come and fill up a cooler for a boat ride, grab ice for a cocktail party, or simply put a scoop in your water bottle. We only ask that you don’t try to fill up a 60-quart cooler or otherwise empty the bin.
Kayak storage is improving this week! At the July general meeting, folks asked about adding some storage options, and we are thrilled that we found a solution. We are moving a few racks closer to the junior building this week that will serve as kayak storage until the August decommissioning week.
Last Friday’s Cornhole Tournament champions are Sheila and Bob Flory, with last year’s winners, Joe Duffy and Eleanor Marshall coming in second place. It was a beautiful evening on the lawn with a great group of members.
First and favorite was the Five Islands Ice Cream race, revived for the third year in a row by Chris and Anne Jacobs. Boats dashed across the Sheepscot to Five Islands for frozen treats. The provisioned sailors finished happy and satiated with Paige Smith, Sabrina Moen and Hadden Brinegar in First Place, Lucy Brown and Taylor Smith in Second and Nancy Custer Carroll with grandson Jeremiah in Third.
Immediately following was the Norma Smith Turnabout Race. This wild, white-knuckled event was attended by 7 sporty turnabouts, who braved the strong tides and fierce wind to complete one long race. The Second place position was fought for fiercely by Chris Jacobs, Nate Phippen and Charlie Phippen where leadership changed places several times as they negotiated their way up the Pratt’s Island shore. Hadden Brinegar took an early commanding lead after a poor start and caught a lucky wind break to maintain the lead for a First place finish. Hot on her heels was second place finisher Nate Phippen, beating out Chris and Charlie, with Chris finishing third.
